Our Team
Electrified Propulsion Control and Efficiency Development (ePCE) is one of the Engineering Departments in the Electrified Propulsion Development (ePD) division at HATCI. ePCE focuses on the energy efficiency and performance improvement of Hyundai/Kia/Genesis propulsion and vehicles.
The Position
HATCI is currently seeking an Engineering Manager - Vehicle Energy Efficiency (VEE) for our Superior Township, MI facility (near Ann Arbor). The VEE is an Engineering Group within ePCE and undertakes various engineering projects related to fuel economy of conventional powertrain and energy efficiency of electrified propulsion system. This position reports to ePCE Department’s Sr. Manager.
Core Responsibilities
- Establish and build Engineering Group’s resource and capability through talent acquisition.
- Understand Department’s business model, strategic direction, purpose, and mission and continually communicate them with direct reports. Set up Engineering Group’s goals and objectives aligned with Department’s direction and drive execution, engagement, and results.
- Develop and manage Engineering Group’s plan, strategy, and budget allocation/usage. Assign tasks and evaluate the performance of direct reports.
- Work with Sr. Manager to participate in Department’s resource planning, goal setting, and technology road map creation.
- Facilitate inter-team collaboration and knowledge sharing through transparent communication.
- Produce and deliver executive presentations on key project milestones and achievements.
- Remain current with new technology and competitive products as means to drive innovation.
- Provide deep dive technical support for vehicle efficiency related concerns for both pre-production and post-production issues.
- Initiate and manage engineering projects related to:
- Development or identification of new technologies, strategies, and methods for improving the fuel economy and energy efficiency of current and future Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis production vehicles
- Establishment of standardized test procedures for vehicle efficiency evaluation considering regulatory requirements
- Evaluation of vehicle propulsion energy efficiency and comparison to competitor systems through benchmarking
- Integration and development of new, more efficient technologies and strategies in targeted vehicle applications and execute appropriate test program(s) for validation of the applied technologies' benefits
- Feasibility analysis of new efficiency improvement function concepts through rapid prototyping and simulation
- Proposal to production programs with POC (Proof of Concept) and support for production implementation through active communications with Korean R&D Headquarter, N.A. sales and manufacturing organizations
- Vehicle simulation model development for energy efficiency estimation
- Investigation of propulsion system technology trends in the U.S. market to support identification of key technologies for vehicle efficiency improvement and compliance strategy, including GHG/CAFE credit programs
- Research activities with external partners including national labs, universities, and tech suppliers
- Industry trend investigation, publication of technical papers and reports internally/externally.
- Travel both domestically and internationally (up to 15%)
Core Capabilities
- History of strong project leadership and a proven track record for timely project delivery and project management
- Experience and detailed understanding of vehicle propulsion systems, propulsion system operation, interactions and performance under various driving conditions, and calibration/control of propulsion systems for simulation of vehicle/propulsion system
- Good communication and interpersonal skills to develop/keep good relationship with tech experts from R&D Center and counterpart teams.

Experience and Skills:
Basic Qualifications
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or other related fields
- 8+ years of automotive engineering experience
- 2+ years of project management experience
- Knowledge in vehicle propulsion/powertrain principle/operation and propulsion control system
- A proven track record of engineering projects related to development, testing or simulation of vehicle propulsion/powertrain systems.
- Knowledge in standardized vehicle test procedures such as EPA driving cycles
- Good written, oral communication and interpersonal skills
- Valid Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record

Preferred Qualifications
- M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or other related fields
- Automotive industry experience in one or more of the following areas: (1) instrumentation and testing of vehicle powertrain/drivetrain and related systems, (2) evaluating vehicle performance, emissions, and fuel economy/efficiency test data, (3) vehicle simulation and model-based development.
- Knowledge and experience in (1) analyzing current and future GHG/CAFE regulations and their impact on vehicle technologies, (2) assessing future trends in-vehicle technologies, and their impact to fuel/energy efficiency, (3) understanding and analyzing GHG/CAFE Credit-related regulations (e.g., Off-Cycle Credits) for US market.
- Experience with data acquisition and analysis tools such as ETAS/INCA and LabView
- Knowledge in data analysis tools such as Matlab and 1-D physical modeling tools such as AVL-Cruise, GT-Suite
