York Business Improvement District (BID) is a not-for-profit, independent organisation. It invests to make improvements and enhancements in York city centre through partnership with its business community. The BID represents circa 900 businesses across leisure, retail, hospitality and office sectors within York City Centre.
Since its launch in April 2016, the BID (with the support of local business owners, stakeholders and key partners) has invested more than £6m into projects and initiatives for the city centre. It has proven itself to be a forward thinking and effective delivery organisation, driving positive change.
The BID works to a 5 year business plan. Every 5 year cycle, businesses vote on what priorities they want to see and on the future of the BID.
The York BID is one of over 300 operational BIDs across the UK. All hereditaments (rateable commercial premises) within the BID area with a rateable value of over £17,500 are required to pay the mandatory levy.

Role Overview
This postholder will be responsible for effectively engaging with levy paying members and ensuring that they are well informed on how the BID is delivering against its Business Plan objectives. The postholder will do this by marketing the BID’s achievements via different marketing channels, balancing the appropriate mix of face to face, digital and printed communications.
The postholder will be specifically responsible for digital marketing channels and management of the BID’s website. Building strong links with the local and regional Press will be important as will proactive engagement with relevant partners in the public and private sector. There will be particular close working with the BID’s Business Manager on the company’s CRM and BID ballot campaign.
The candidate will be joining a small team, so will not be afraid of ‘getting their hands dirty’ to make things happen! All job roles at the York BID are outward facing and this post is no different, so you will have to be happy engaging with businesses on a day to day basis.
Principal aspects of the role
- Preparation of press releases, editorial articles, copy, media briefings and relationships, media monitoring and analysis. Work with wider team on comments on relevant Press stories.
- Forge proactive relations with local and regional press, radio and relevant editorials.
- Take the lead on relationship management with partner organisations such as the local Destination Management Organisation, City York Council and other key partners as identified by the wider team.
- Work with the Business Manager to produce an annually reviewed engagement strategy, linked to the BIDs CRM system.
- Management of BID digital platforms, including website and social media.
- Produce a monthly newsletter on BID activities.
- Lead on an annual programme of engagement events, ensuring it has varying touchpoints to take account of the variety of stakeholders the BID communicates with.
- Working with the Business Manager, champion the BID brand to be highly visible and effective. Act as brand guardian and work with partners to ensure consistent application of the brand
- Support the BID team with the marketing of targeted campaigns designed to attract and retain visitors, footfall and spend in the city centre.
- Work closely with the Operations Manager on promoting the BID through engagement- based projects
- Drive gift card sales through promotion of the scheme to businesses, corporates and the general public

Knowledge, skills and experience needed
Essential
- Experience of a relevant marketing / engagement role
- Experience of digital content management and social platforms
- Comfortable working independently and dealing with stakeholders face to face
- Strong professional written communication skills; creative writing ability to prepare press releases, editorial and copy for marketing materials. Good eye for design and attention to detail.
- Ability to meet tight deadlines and work within a commercial environment
- Confident communicating face to face and to large groups
- Good IT skills; fully competent on Microsoft Office
- Ability to work flexibly within a team
Desirable
- Experience of website management
- Success in developing relationships with press and PR partners
- Work on branding campaigns
- Experience of organising stakeholder events
- Degree or equivalent qualification
- Good ICT skills using MS Word, Excel
Salary: £23-26,000 per year dependent on experience
Responsible To: Business Manager York BID
Hours: Full Time, 37.5 hours per week
Flexible working: The role is office based in York city centre in order to engage effectively with business customers. Flexible working is available upon request providing it does not hinder core operations / pre-agreed with relevant line management.
Entitlements: 25 days holiday plus pension
Contract: Permanent, subject to successful BID renewal. Also subject to a three month probation period. 2 Month notice period.
