Elevate is BRE’s fast-track development programme in becoming a subject specialist and supporting us in being industry leaders in the built environment. Through joining our Elevate programme, you will be challenged, developed, coached and supported on your path to becoming a subject matter expert in your field.

You will spend your first nine months working in your home role of Data Scientist Graduate. You will also have the option of completing two skills development placements at three months each, where these are intended to upskill you in pre-identified areas, followed by your final nine months back in your home role, also working on an exciting project and presentation.


Why does the role exist?

Our Energy Data & Insights team is growing in response to increased demand within the development and maintenance of the UK’s National Calculation Methodologies. We are looking for a Graduate with experience in data analytics, data science and/or project management to continue our strategically important programmes of work, to improve insights and guidance to meet challenges across the built environment.

The team provide government, commercial organisations, and individuals with technical support on a variety of areas related to the energy performance of buildings. From developing National Calculation Methodologies and tools such as SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) and SBEM (Simplified Building Energy Model), to undertaking complex dynamic simulations. We provide research and consultancy for projects including the creation of new applications and products such as the Excess Cold Calculator.

The value you will add:

  • Support the design and creation of modular systems/methodologies considering integration and interoperability.
  • Work with senior developers on the implementation of methodologies into software applications.
  • Analyse and interpret evidence from field trials, laboratory experiments and other sources to develop improved methods for estimating energy performance.
  • Contribute to the day-to-day technical aspects of multiple projects.
  • Support the team’s client engagement activities (such as UK government) to identify needs and develop specifications of project requirements.
  • Support the Insights and Consultancy business development activities, including bid writing and project pricing.
  • Work across the Insights and Consultancy team, and wider BRE teams where relevant such as our Sales and Marketing teams.
  • Engage regularly with our Public Relations and Communications teams to share our insights, published reports, and promote our research across the built environment sector.
  • You'll be at the forefront of researching and developing methodologies and tools that enable assessment of the energy performance of buildings.
  • Working closely with colleagues, you'll undertake research, analysis, and software development.

  • You'll support the delivery of projects creating methodologies and software for various government and international projects.
  • You'll contribute to tools that best reflect policy objectives, based on research and analysis of available data and standards.
  • You'll play a valuable role within the team, contributing to debate on technical and logistic solutions and the opportunity to present the results of your work to enable knowledge and idea sharing.

What skills and experience does the role need?

Essential

  • A degree in a relevant STEM related discipline
  • A genuine interest in the built environment
  • Experience analysing and interpreting complex quantitative data and information
  • Experience using programming languages such as C++, Python, R
  • Experience applying problem solving and analytical skills
  • Enthusiasm and initiative both individually and as part of a team
  • Flexible approach to work and a willingness to be involved in a variety of different projects, including consultancy and research
  • Articulate, with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A natural curiosity with a desire to develop new skills and relationships
  • The confidence to speak up with great ideas, embrace change and seek innovative ways of working

Desirable

  • Knowledge of Energy related policy and/or the BRE business
  • Experience and knowledge of sustainability in the built environment
  • Eagerness to be involved in programmes of work that support and influence national policy

What salary and benefits does the Elevate programme offer?

Your salary will start at £30,000 in year one, with an increase to £32,000 in year two, then upon a successful interview and completion of the Elevate programme, you will be promoted into a higher-level role in your home team, with a salary of at least £34,000.
