Job description
Our vision is to create a safe and sustainable world
The role
The successful candidate will lead a wide range of rolling stock, infrastructure, and research-driven projects on behalf of clients such as Alstom, Eversholt, Hitachi, Irish Rail, LNER and RSSB.
The role is primarily technical, delivering work of the right quality, cost and timescales for a range of electrical and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) projects. You will also work with colleagues and the business development team to secure new projects and identify new clients and services.
Key responsibilities
- Support business development activities and write proposals. In doing so, identify potential risks, devise method statements, specify clear acceptance criteria, and generate resource and cost estimates.
- Deliver projects and work packages working with clients to understand their objectives and desired outcomes for each project.
- Produce and oversee electromagnetic analysis for a range of projects.
- Produce high-quality project outputs, demonstrating an ability to tailor your style to meet client requirements and deliver reports with clear objectives and conclusions.
- Demonstrate flexibility and a focus on client-satisfaction. This includes understanding client needs and issues, developing requirements and solutions, managing client expectations and delivering high quality outputs.
- Liaise with clients, project stakeholders and other industry participants.
Key competencies and experience
- A sound understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals and the application of electromagnetic theory.
- A good working knowledge of one or more major railway electrical systems (AC/DC Traction Power, AC/DC rolling stock, Signalling/Communication systems) from design and/or maintenance experience
- Understanding the mechanisms that generate interference from electrical systems and power electronics and how these can be mitigated to achieve the safety and reliability required in rail applications.
- Experience of fault and failure investigation, including root-cause analysis and solution identification.
- Practical application of modelling techniques and tools commonly applied to the analysis of traction power and associated EMC related issues e.g. SPICE Circuit Simulator Tool (Microcap), Mathcad, Matlab, Diadem, Finite Element (FEMM), etc.
- Experience in using these tools to extract critical information for inclusion within an engineering safety case and, in doing so, forming a credible safety argument that the change is safe and that risks are controlled to an acceptable level.
- Good time-management skills and the ability to deliver on a range of concurrent projects to time and budget.
- Good communication skills, including the capability to engage positively with clients and colleagues as part of a consultancy project team, and to influence decision-makers. This includes the ability to present technical information to customers in clear, complete, concise and non-ambiguous terms.
- Relevant experience in the rail sector or similar adjacent sector.
- Degree or equivalent technical qualification, with experience in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (preferred)
-
Experience writing engineering safety cases with a bias to electrical engineering issues such as:
- overhead line harmonics;
- interference into trackside equipment;
- train-borne interference interacting with safety critical signalling systems; and
- compliance to EMC standards such as EN 50121.
-
Experience in risk assessment (EN / Yellow Book / Common Safety Method Risk Assessment) incorporating:
- participation in HazID meetings.
- development and maintenance of Hazard Records.
- appreciation of failure modes of equipment.
- liaising with TOC / ROSCO etc. and NR/ ORR/ RSSB to manage and mitigate risks, and support safety justification arguments.
- Knowledge and understanding of some or all of DC Stray current, Electromagnetic Fields and Human Health, Protection from Electric Shock, legal and market requirements related to electromagnetic compatibility compliance and radio frequencies.
We will encourage you to use your passion and expertise to make a positive impact through the projects you work on. Your knowledge and desire to bring about change will be invaluable in helping deliver innovative solutions that support communities across the globe in becoming safer and more sustainable.
