Summary of Role

We are looking for an EHS Assistant to join our UK EHS team. The role is split between Glenrothes and Livingston and is predominantly an onsite role. The EHS Assistant will provide generalist support within the EHS department to the EHS site Advisor and wider EHS and Facilities team covering all topics relating to Environment, Health and Safety.
The workload is varied from day to day and can involve accessing and working on roofs to working in basement areas of the site, carrying out inspections, audits, investigations, and any ongoing project works. You will be required to carry out external inspections walking and covering the vast areas of each site, including external stairwells, lower basement levels etc. In addition to some of these varied hands on tasks you will be a point of contact for guidance to management and employees across the business. This role can involve some business travel to support several business locations throughout the UK sites.
Main Duties
- Working on various projects with the EHS team internally and externally on site. This will require accessing roof areas, lower basement areas, entering high hazard areas, chemical storage areas etc.
- Demonstrate initiative in developing EHS programmes and initiating change processes
- Develop a good understanding of the EHS management system in line with legal requirements and corporate standards
- Provide EHS advice and guidance, using escalation techniques when required
- Working knowledge of risk assessment and initiating action plans
- Participate and involvement in physical audits and inspections e.g Roof, Basements, plantrooms, manufacturing areas, Labs and Chemical Storage areas incident investigations, EHS meetings and sustainability activities
- Assistance with site compliance and associated compliance tasks. This may require 5 continuous days of walking around the site carrying out noise assessments, Occupational Hygiene Monitoring, Extinguisher checks etc.
- Participates in continuous improvement activities
- Keeps up to date with EHS requirements
- Report writing on EHS related issues and performance objectives and metrics
- Ability to work to timescales, achieve personal goals and contribute to team effectiveness
- Working knowledge of COSHH Assessments and running the programme
- Assist set up and roll out of Occupational Hygiene Monitoring programme
- Co-ordinates and plans annual EHS training programme working with shift plans and trainers availability to maximise attendance and compliance
- Setting up rooms in advance of training sessions, aiding the trainer when arriving with equipment and room set up when on site and acting as host
- Manages completion of EHS incident data and provides weekly status report on overdue items
- Ensures contractor safety requirements are managed in partnership with Facilities Management. This can mean all aspects including sourcing relevant documentation, pre work discussions, inductions and physically escorting/working with the contractors dependant on task
- Supports departmental inspections, meetings and remedial actions to a full and effective closure
- Responsible for Fire Extinguishers’ legal and corporate compliance
- Deputises for EHS Advisor in incident situations and keeps Incident Response Team (IRT) Muster Room information updated. Be able to respond instantly within minutes of alert to Muster Room and carry out role effectively such as role call, working with the Incident Response Team and Fire Brigade
- Arrange co-ordinate and initiate Fire Drills and full reporting requirements
- Specialist safety supplies are sourced and maintained. You will be required to source, order, take receipt of items then physically taking any items to the areas required or physically take to the relevant location anywhere on site
- Participates in internal audit programme for business management systems (ISO 14001 and 45001 standards)
- Assists and engages with employees regarding EHS concerns and closure to minimise risk
- Involvement in specific technical risk assessments on an ad-hoc basis e.g. process and task improvements
- Assisting with first aid and ergonomic needs – Industrial and Office
- Assists in monitoring of the workplace environment and involves Occupational Health when required
- Preparing and chairing the Sustainability Team and initiating and engaging in new initiatives. This can include checking skips on site, carrying out spot checks, setting up waste teams and mini improvement projects
Candidate Requirements
Education
- NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent
- Relevant University degree and relevant experience
Essential
- Proficient at report writing, creating and presenting presentations using Microsoft office tools (in particular: Excel, Word and PowerPoint)
- High level of initiative and committed to meeting goals
- Excellent skills in communication (written and verbal) and building relationships at all levels with an energetic and enthusiastic approach
- Able to provide support to facilities management – this can be supporting day to day activities, aiding the contractor process, carrying out tours, inspections audits out in all areas of site.
- Able to manage a diverse workload and prioritise accordingly
- Member of a relevant recognised industry professional body (e.g. IOSH, IIRSM) or working towards
- Commitment to continual professional development
- Ability to contribute effectively to a team and participate with group discussion
- Good verbal and analytical skills
- Current holder of or eligibility to obtain MoD Secret (SC) level security clearance
- Able to complete tasks with minimum supervision (essential)
- Ability to drive between sites should matter arise during working day (essential)
- Knowledge of sustainability and best management practices
Desirable
- Environmental qualification such as IEMA Certificate
- Willingness to obtain an auditing qualification (ISO 14001:2015 and 45001:2015)
