The Alternative Education Centre (AEC) is based on a farm setting on the Blackdown Hills.
We offer vocational skills at Entry Level and Level One is subjects areas such as Bricklaying, Carpentry, Motor Vehicle, Metalwork, Bike Maintenance, Cooking, Agriculture and Arts and Crafts plus others.
Our students come from a range of educational provisions, from the ages of 11+ and typically struggle or aren't suited to mainstream education and may display a variety of complex difficulties including behavioural concerns, aggression, emotional/mental health needs, learning difficulties, autism and ADHD.
We provide emotional support aiming to improve behavioural issues, boost self-esteem and confidence with the aspiration they will be able to reintegrate into main stream school, attend college or complete an apprenticeship on leaving the AEC.
We are currently looking to expand out current team, and are seeking a reliable person who can maintain strong boundaries and demonstrates a compassionate approach to education. You will possess the ability to remain calm in difficult situations.
Daily tasks will include:
- Working 1:1 with students in their preferred area of interest
- Help student work towards Entry Level units
- Liaise with the Head of Centre to see if any specific targets need to ne met
- Liaise with our Site Manager to see if repairs, maintenance or cleaning tasks need completing once the students have left
- Completion of daily reports for students
Essential Criteria:
- Ability to cope in difficult behavioural situations
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and colleagues
- High level of patience, understanding and compassion
- Knowledge of two of the subject areas
- A desire to expand own skills and knowledge through personal development and training
Preferable Criteria:
- Knowledge of Mechanics
- Experience of working on site or in a trade
- Driving Licence
- Experience working with children and/or vulnerable adults
- Knowledge of behavioural management
