House of Commons

The House of Commons a unique and exciting place to work right at the heart of the UK's thriving democratic system.

Behind the scenes, the House of Commons Service is made up of more than 3,000 employees who support and facilitate the smooth day to day running of the House. They provide professional services to Members of Parliament, their staff, and the wider parliamentary community.

Staff Benefits

In addition to your salary, we offer an attractive range of benefits including:

  • 30 days’ annual leave (increasing to 35 days after first full leave year).
  • Civil Service pension with an average employer contribution of 27%.
  • Access to training and development.
  • Flexible working.
  • Interest free season ticket loan and bicycle loan.

Introduction

We deliver face-to-face and online educational programmes and learning resources for schools, teachers, home educators and school-age children across the UK. We also manage engagement activities and campaigns that target the broader UK population, prioritising people and communities who are less engaged with Parliament and Members’ work.

The Teacher Training Team is part of E&E and works with teachers and educators from across the UK so that they can increase their learners’ understanding of how Parliament works and of how they can engage directly with the work of the House of Commons and House of Lords.

The Role

The Education and Engagement Officer (Teacher Training) will join a growing team, dedicated to working with teachers at all stages of their career so that they can inspire their learners to discover more about UK Parliament and engage with what happens here.

The role will involve delivery of our online and inward tours and workshops for teachers at UK Parliament and supporting the development of partnerships with a range of organisations in order to reach educators in particularly disengaged areas and sectors

It is expected that the post-holder will start delivering to teachers within the first month in the job, following suitable training.

Some of the responsibilities for this role include:

  • To contribute to the expansion of the teacher training programme by direct delivery through tours, workshops and seminars.
  • To support communications for our digital offer e.g. UK Parliament Teacher Network and e-learning for teachers.
  • To support other public-facing teams, particularly the Education Centre, Campaigns, Outreach and Select Committee engagement teams, in their delivery of public engagement events and programmes.
  • To ensure a productive and positive working relationship with Members of both Houses and their staff.

Skills and Experience

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to speak clearly and impartially.
  • An ability to successfully produce and present educational content to an audience of teachers.
  • Effective organisation and time management skills to support the planning and delivery of work across the team.
  • A commitment to continuous professional development. Experience of gathering feedback and implementing this to improve best practice and outcomes.
  • Experience of event management, including what constitutes excellent customer service, and of how events can be made accessible and inclusive for everyone.
  • (desirable) A passion for democratic engagement and an awareness of the requirements of the four national curriculums and relevant exam syllabuses.
