Job Introduction
The role of Editorial Assistant will help oversee the day-to-day management of the rota and the overall editorial staffing needs at MailOnline and Metro.co.uk.
With over 300 UK employees and growing, the Managing Editor's office is responsible for building the rotas, managing absence through Workday, recruitment, staff appraisals, monthly budget spend and the overall pressures that come with working in 24-hour online news operation.
Main Responsibilities
- Complete weekly administrative tasks: submitting casual timesheets, stationery orders, downloading and updating reports
- Work closely with HR on contract requests, other ad hoc queries and administrative changes through Workday
- Assist with recruitment: ensure job postings are live and relevant and assist section editors with scheduling interviews, trial shifts and offers of employment
- On-boarding new staff: arrange IT equipment, building pass, systems training, and any other relevant training
- Assist with individual department's staffing needs and liaising with department heads on staffing matters
- Oversee adherence to company policies and update where necessary
Person Specification
- Office administration experience is essential
- Journalistic experience/training and knowledge of working in a digital news operation is desirable, as is an understanding of the Editors' Code and media and copyright law.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to prioritise work to meet tight deadlines
- Exceptional organisational skills
As you learn and take on tasks successfully, the scope of the role will widen to include rota management across various newsroom departments, and many other key responsibilities to ensure the smooth-running of the editorial operation.
This is a brilliant role if you have a strong interest in journalism and want to be at the heart of MailOnline & Metro.co.uk's editorial operation. This is an office-based position at MailOnline's head office in Kensington, London.
