The salary range for this position begins at $81,242.

Knopf Canada is looking for senior/executive-level editor to join our team:

At Knopf Canada—literary home to some of the world’s finest writers—we care deeply about stories and ideas and the power of art to change the way we think. As a team, we are committed to asking questions openly, sharing answers freely, learning from each other to strengthen and refine how we work. We are looking for a highly accomplished editor to join our conversation. This position will report to the publisher.
What you’ll do:
- Solicit, read and evaluate manuscripts and proposals.
- Seek out and identify new creative talent from a variety of different sources.
- Participate in and contribute expertise to acquisition conversations within the group.
- Acquire and edit literary fiction and narrative non-fiction titles.
- Negotiate offers with agents, authors.
- Substantively edit manuscripts.
- Manage the lifecycle of the editorial process from acquisition to publication maintaining effective relationships with production, managing editorial/copyediting, cover, and interior design.
- Act as advocate within the company, working in close partnership with marketing, publicity, and sales teams to realize the best publication opportunities for each book.
- Develop and maintain author and agent relationships.
Experience and knowledge you’ll bring (qualifications):
- A minimum of 8-10 years of editorial experience in book publishing or a related field.
- A proven record of editorial excellence in literary fiction and narrative non-fiction.
- A love of reading, and a dedicated interest in the ideas and voices that shape our world.
- Exceptional creative initiative.
- Established contacts with authors and agents, both in Canada and internationally.
- A thorough knowledge of the entire publishing process, including an understanding of a publishing publishing profit & loss statement.
- Deep understanding of the Canadian literary marketplace and cultural landscape.
- Impeccable substantive and line editing skills.
- Expert copywriting skills.
- Superior negotiation skills.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, with an ability to manage multiple projects on tight deadlines.
- Independent, curious, passionate, and purposeful, this person will be a vital member of a small and highly collaborative team.
- An inclusive approach to your work, supported by well-developed cultural competency skills and a proven ability to collaborate with people from across a wide range of diverse backgrounds.
- Enhanced knowledge, awareness, and experience with the culture and history of any community that has faced marginalization is considered a plus.
