Astell Associates (a trading name of Eastland Foresters Ltd) has an exciting new opportunity for an additional ecologist to join our team.
We are looking for a person ideally with a minimum of two years of proven experience within an ecological consultancy.
The ability to carry out Preliminary Ecological Appraisal surveys and produce the associated reports independently is essential. A knowledge of carrying out tree surveys would be very advantageous. Experience of a range of survey methodologies and at least one protected species survey licence is highly desirable.
The role will include but not be limited to:
- Carrying out arboricultural (tree) surveys;
- Undertaking protected species surveys on a variety of sites across Scotland;
- Undertaking Preliminary Ecological Appraisals on a variety of sites across the north of Scotland;
- Producing comprehensive survey reports for a variety of Clients;
- Liaising with Clients to answer queries.
The role will provide an opportunity for you to demonstrate a broad range of skills by undertaking specialist technical work, whilst working as part of a small, integrated, environmental team. Our work is varied and widespread.
Our ideal candidate will have skills and experience in the following areas:
- A Degree/ Masters in Ecology or a related subject;
- At least 2 years’ experience within an ecological consultancy;
- Experience in conducting arboricultural surveys;
- Protected Species surveys (including bats and badgers) across a variety of sites;
- Preliminary Ecological Appraisals;
- Report writing for Ecological Consultancy, including using software such as QGIS, ArcGIS and AutoCAD;
- Experience of office-based tasks, such as producing fee proposals, carrying out desk studies and liaising with Clients;
- Excellent English verbal, written and communication skills and a keen eye for detail;
- Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM);
- Protected Species Licences or at least one reference for such licences would be advantageous; and
- A full driving licence.
Working Environment:
- You will be based at our office just outside Aberdeen, with the potential to work remotely when necessary.
- Our normal working hours are Monday to Friday, but you should be available to work flexible hours, including unsociable hours, particularly during the busy summer bat survey season.

Salary: £25,000.00-£30,000.00 per year
