We have a very exciting opportunity for someone to join us as a Shift Operations Manager at our flagship North West Hub in Warrington and be a key part of this amazing transformation.
As part of our future strategy, Royal Mail is creating a network of new and exciting automated Parcel Hubs, the first of which became operational in June 2022 in Warrington. These new Hubs will be world-class; providing state-of-the-art automation sortation solutions helping us to ensure we continue to excel at providing a great service to all our customers and the communities we deliver to. We are looking for a passionate, motivated and experienced Shift Operations Manager to join the Hub leadership team and be part of our future. You will play an instrumental part in the fast pace environment of the new Hub, managing and leading our Hub teams to build trusted relationships and delivering a world class automated operation with the capability to process 40,000 parcels an hour.
What does the role involve?
The Shift Operations Manager is a member of the Senior Hub Leadership team and is responsible for operations across the shift. You will input to processing strategy and delivery of engagement and people initiatives. Leading a team of Team Managers and working alongside the Shift Flow Manager and Engineering Manager for the successful achievement of safety, quality of service, productivity, automation performance/utilisation (APSS) and employee targets. The Shift Operations Manager will have excellent commercial understanding, focusing their decisions on data and leading their team to run a successful APSS operation to workplan. You will continuously improve and challenge to maximise flow, eliminate waste and downtime.
What skills and experience are we looking for
To be truly successful in this role, you’ll possess the following knowledge, skills and experience:
Knowledge (desired)
- Knowledge/experience as a shift manager in an automated working environment
- Automation knowledge, mech performance metrics and the role of engineering in effective automation performance
- Extensive and proven experience of driving performance and change within a highly unionised environment
- Planning skills/project management - able to develop a plan, understand the risks, monitor progress and deploy the plan to time with benefits achieved.
- Data analysis and problem solving – ability to evaluate APSS performance, using KPIs/metrics, identify trends and shifts in performance and develop solutions/make improvements.
- Stakeholder management – able to build effective relationships with a range of senior stakeholders to achieve business benefit.
- Strong drive, enthusiasm and resilience – constantly strives to improve performance, ability to build strong working relationships and energise colleagues. Able to work under pressure and in a fast-paced working environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to articulate and explain clearly by having outstanding verbal and written skills.
- Excellent presentational skills to deliver effective and engaging presentations to a variety of audiences.
- IT literate
- Budget management.
- CI improvement techniques and minimisation of waste / downtime
- A persuasive leader with drive and a well-developed ability to identify and resolve problems
- Proven experience of successfully running a large operation (ideally with automation)
- Experiencing of leading a large team and working as a second line manager
- PIC trained
- Start up/major change experience
- Able to work with complex system data
- Able to build effective working relationships with a range of key stakeholders to achieve business objectives
