MAIN PURPOSE
Somebody Cares Scotland is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) committed to improving the welfare of the impoverished of Aberdeen. It accepts donations of furnishings, household items, clothes and food bags, in great quantities, from the people of Aberdeen and then either donates them free of charge to those that need them, or sell them on our Megastore, using the proceeds to cover the running costs of the organisation.
A Driver-Warehouseman is responsible to the Logistics Manager but the workload and duties will be assigned to all such staff as required on a rota basis by the Warehouse Logistics Manager or the Megastore Manager.
He/she needs to achieve timely collections of donations and deliveries, be able to achieve systematic and efficient receipt, sorting and distribution of donations, and to ensure that all appropriate standards of health and safety, security and quality are met.
MAIN DUTIES
Driver
Each van usually has 2 Drivers. The roles of lead and assistant drivers will be determined by the respective manager on the day but, essentially, both are expected to act as part of a team and assume all the responsibilities below whether they are the designated driver or not.
Collect items from Donors Houses, refusing any that do not comply with UK Regulations. Drop these items off at the Megastore (for re-sale) or the Warehouse (for donations), or to any of the satellite warehouses.
Deliver goods from the Warehouse to Clients, and from the Megastore to Customers.
To ensure that all goods are handled with care, firmly secured, and are not damaged in transit. Vans will be regularly checked to ensure this.
To ensure that the vans are properly maintained and cleaned.
To drive with due care and attention, within legal requirements.
To encourage Donors to allow Gift Aid against items sold providing forms when required.
Warehouseman
Work with the Warehouse Manager /Megastore Manager to organize Goods Inwards, Storage Area and Goods Outwards, in any or all of the warehouse buildings and Megastore as directed by their immediate Manager
Interface with Van Drivers when dropping off or picking up donated goods.
To ensure that all goods are handled with care, and properly located so as not to cause damage to the items or passers-by.
To work with the Volunteers to ensure that all display areas are safely and adequately maintained both for the regular walk-arounds by Clients / Customers.
Facilities
Work with the Facilities Manager as requested to assist with some of the tasks required at our various properties – such as meter readings, running water through the systems, and testing fire alarms.
Generic
To wear the allocated uniform and always appear smart and clean.
To communicate effectively to staff, volunteers, clients, customers and management.
To report in daily if they are off work for any reason other than approved holidays.
To report to the relevant Managers if allocated to work at the Warehouse or Megastore.
To comply with Somebody Cares SCIO’s Health and Safety Policy.
To ensure statutory responsibilities are met concerning fire regulations.
To report any incidents to the Warehouse Logistics Manager / Megastore Manager.
Any other duties which are consistent with the duties and responsibilities of the post.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Clean and current driving licence.
- Physically fit enough to carry items of furniture.
- A knowledge of the health and safety regulations that impact on the work for customers, clients and volunteers.
OTHER FEATURES OF THE JOB
Somebody Cares Warehouse is open Monday to Friday (08:30 – 16:30), and closed on all Aberdeen public holidays and for 2 weeks over the Christmas period. Somebody Cares Megastore is open Mon – Sat (9:30 – 4:30) and on all public and bank holidays apart from 25th and 26th December and 1st and 2nd January. The post-holder will be expected to work a 40 hour week with half an hour for lunch, five days each week. Some flexibility in the working hours will be required from time to time.
