We are currently seeking a “Junior Electrical Instrumentation & Controls Designer/Drafter” to support our dynamic team. As an integral member of the group, you will have the opportunity to design instrumentation and control systems for a variety of oil and gas facilities. Your pride in ensuring that these systems and processes operate effectively, efficiently, and safely will be a vital part of this diverse and interesting position.
Responsibilities:
- Assists experienced technical staff with aspects of a complex project and works in accordance with established engineering practices and design / drafting protocols
- Produces a variety of discipline specific project drawings as per engineers' markups or senior drafter / designer direction, including electrical plot plans, hazardous area drawings, single line diagrams, PLC drawings, MCC, instrument location drawings, control panel layouts, general arrangement drawings, junction box terminating drawings, and wiring schematics etc.
- Creates and modifies drawings based on sketches, templates, or previous designs
- Performs simple or routine arithmetic calculations
- Updates drawing data and filing information as per established procedures
- Attends design meetings as per senior designer's directions
- Adheres to and follows Solaris and client drafting standards
- Back drafts from check prints and markups
- Develops drawings based on sketches or previous designs
- As-builds drawings as directed by the Electrical Engineer / Technologist
- Performs routine material take offs (MTO) and bills of materials (BOM) for commodity items
- Plots drawings as required using the SMCI Batch Issuer
- Assists to develop the Drafting Standards
- Files documents and drawings
- Complies with Client-specific drawing specifications and SMCI Document Control procedures
- Adheres to, and follows Checking Procedures
- Responsible for adhering to all health and safety policies and guidelines
- Reports directly to a senior designer
Skills and Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education with technical diploma in Engineering, Construction, CAD/CADD, Design/Drafting, and/or Applied Sciences
- Registered Graduate Technologist and Technician (GradTech) with Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC (ASTTBC) is preferred
- 0-2 years of relevant work experience or equivalent combination of studies
- Basic familiarity with AutoCAD software
- Valid technical software vendor certification is preferred, including Autodesk AutoCAD Certified User or Professional, Autodesk Certified Professional in AutoCAD for Design and Drafting
- Ability to perform 2D drafting, and 3D modelling would also be an asset
- Open-minded with the ability to follow instructions, work under direct supervision, and accept constructive feedback
- Ability to complete assigned tasks and make minor technical decisions in accordance with established engineering standards and procedures
- Self-motivated with good communication skills, with the ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Positive, creative, and with a continuous learning mindset
- Experience with Microsoft Office products is preferred
- Interest or experience in the natural gas, LNG and alternative energy industry is preferred
- Proficiency with digital collaborative software (Revu, MS Teams, etc.)
- Good understanding of how to read electrical, instrumentation and controls engineering drawings and site plans
- Ability to use judgment to solve problems based on engineering guidelines and procedures
- Ability to perform and complete multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Basic familiarity with engineering codes and standards
- Ability to travel to and work at site as required
