Full Time London, England 11.4 GBP HOURLY Today
Job description

Overview of the role

Archive Mole is a fast-growing research firm founded in August 2020. Our mission is simple: to provide historians and history students across the world with digital copies of historical documents located in UK archives, libraries and record offices. Although we now offer a range of other solutions to the history profession, Document Copying remains our most popular service. In our first year alone, we copied over 110,000 documents for historians based at 55 universities in North America, China, Australia, Europe and the UK.

We are seeking new members to join our pool of Document Copiers to take photographs of historical documents within the Greater London area (zones 1-4). This varied role is ideal for an organised and diligent individual who wants to earn some extra money. The role is flexible and you will be free to accept or decline assignments offered to suit your schedule and personal commitments. We may offer you work at various locations across London, but you will mostly be asked to visit the National Archives at Kew, home to 11 million historical documents, and the British Library, one of the largest libraries in the world. Your hours of work will vary depending on the requirements of your assignment, and you will only be asked to work weekdays and, occasionally, Saturdays.

You will enjoy this role if:

  • You want a job with variety and flexibility
  • You enjoy taking photographs
  • You have an interest in history
  • You like taking ownership and working independently without constant supervision
  • You are highly organised and have a natural ability to work to processes and deadlines
  • You do not want to work in an office!

Core duties

  • Take photographs of a specified list of historical documents located in London-based archives, libraries and/or record offices
  • Ensure that all photographs are consistent and up to the required standard
  • Transfer all photographs to the Lead Researcher according to agreed-upon specifications
  • Maintain camera equipment

Experience, skills and requirements

Essential

  • Fluent in using digital cameras (SLR or phone)
  • Own a digital camera (SLR or smartphone)
  • Ability to travel across London (zones 1-4)
  • Excellent time-management skills
  • A keen eye for detail
  • Highly organised and diligent with a natural ability to work to processes and deadlines
  • Web and digital savvy
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work independently without constant supervision
  • Ability to maintain focus and concentration
  • A flexible approach to work

Desirable

  • Experience of working in or visiting archives, libraries and/or record offices
  • A passion for history

We will provide you with any necessary training required; all such training is mandatory.
