This is a full time/fixed term opportunity for 36 months

Gross salary per month (before tax, employer and employee national insurance costs and pension contributions): 3400 Euro + 600 Euro mobility allowance + family allowance is 660 Euro (if you have family at the time of recruitment)

We have an exciting and rare opportunity to join a prestigious European training network programme. We are looking for a doctoral candidate to join the European training network DIALECT team (https://dialect-diabeticfoot.eu/ ) The successful candidate will be registered as a PhD student with the topic: Offloading with additive manufactured insoles using optimally tested designs. The aim of this project is to explore, design, manufacture and test beyond state-of-the-art custom-made insoles for people with diabetes at risk of ulceration via machine learning and computer aided design and manufacturing. The PhD training includes carefully selected placements with academic and industry partners.

Diabetes Lower Extremity Complication Research and Training Network in Foot Ulcer and Amputation Prevention (DIALECT) aims to combat diabetic foot disease through personalised medicine, by establishing an innovative, international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral research and training effort that will deliver the next generation of leading, entrepreneurial and creative scientists to reinforce the European innovative workforce. This project is funded by UKRI as part of the DIALECT project which is Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Networks under the EU Research and Innovation programme Horizon Europe. In total, 11 doctoral candidates will be funded under DIALECT.

We are seeking a highly motivated scientist with an excellent academic track record, educated to Masters level in health science, human movement science, biomechanical or mechanical engineering or related field. Applicants must have excellent analytical skills and communication skills, practical lab skills in relevant discipline, ability to function in an interdisciplinary environment and fluent spoken and written English. Some experience of additive manufacturing and design techniques, 3D modelling software e.g. PTC Creo and Finite Element Analysis software e.g. ANSYS would be advantageous.

The successful candidate will join the Musculoskeletal Health Research Group, an inter-disciplinary research group of health professionals, human movement scientists and engineers. Working across the School of Health and Life Sciences and the School of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment the candidate will learn from, and collaborate with, a multi-disciplinary group of researchers with expertise in foot and ankle biomechanics and engineering with a successful track record in European training networks. The candidate will have access to (1) State-of-the-art Human Performance Laboratories; (2) CAD/CAM, Computer Aided Design, and Manufacturing tools together with 3D modeling and analysis software packages. Further mechanical, 3D printing, and material testing laboratories; (3) materials selection (Granta Edupack) software and (4) strategic academic-health partnerships provides access to the NHS and associated clinical expertise.
