Job description

Available Job Today Depot General Manager – Biggleswade

£90,000 to £110,000 (depending on experience) plus benefits including company car (Work Level 4)

Biggleswade with occasional travel throughout the UK

We’re looking for a depot general manager (DGM) to join us at Co-op and lead all aspects of our fast-paced depot operation in Biggleswade.

Biggleswade is our flagship depot, responsible for picking multi-temperature produce for over 1,300 stores across East Anglia and North London. It plays a huge role in keeping our customers happy – making sure our stores are stocked with the products they need, when they need them. But it’s not just our customers we want to keep happy. We want to make sure our colleagues have the best working environment possible so they can bring their best selves to work.

As our DGM you’ll translate our nationwide logistics strategy into an operational plan and put the right tools and processes in place to help us deliver a best-in-class logistics service. We’re on a cultural journey across our logistics function, and you will have a pivotal role to play in continuing to shape our culture at Biggleswade and ensuring colleagues there are engaged and motivated.

We’ll also look to you to drive significant operational change over the coming years as we continue to develop our national logistics strategy. As a critical part of the logistics leadership team at Co-op, you’ll own relationships with outsourcing partners and trade unions, and work with senior colleagues from across the wider business.

It’s a big job. But if you can bring us the leadership experience we’re after, we can offer you the chance to shape the future of our Biggleswade depot and make a huge impact on our entire food business.

What you’ll do

  • lead our depot in Biggleswade, ensuring the delivery of our operational strategy with a customer first approach
  • lead, coach and develop a high performing and highly engaged multi-disciplinary leadership team
  • create the conditions for a highly engaged and motivated workforce.
  • land strategic change which will improve national ways of working
  • develop a culture of continuous improvement
  • grow and manage important and critical relationships with internal stakeholders across food operations, 3PL and trade unions
  • ensure the distribution centre operates efficiently adhering to legislative and operational requirements
  • deliver the operational budget and a cost-effective operation

This role would suit people who have

  • previously led and landed positive change within a large and complex organisation like ours
  • a comprehensive understanding of logistics/manufacturing, site management and food retail operations
  • strong leadership skills, and a passion for developing others
  • experience of managing a sizeable budget

Why Co-op?

Here you’ll do work that matters. We’re a commercial organisation with a purpose beyond profit, you’ll have an opportunity to help us build a stronger Co-op and stronger communities. You’ll also get a package that includes:

  • a competitive salary
  • a car allowance or company car
  • private health cover
  • an annual incentive scheme
  • 28 days holiday (rising to 32 with service) plus bank holidays
  • discounts on Co-op products and services
  • a pension with up to 10% employer contributions

Building an inclusive work environment

We’re actively building diverse teams and we welcome applications from everyone. We want to build inclusive work environments, where our colleagues have equal opportunities to reach their full potential. We celebrate our differences and recognise the importance of our teams reflecting the communities they serve.

If you have a disability, we can make reasonable adjustments to our recruitment process according to your needs. We're also part of the Disability Confident scheme, meaning we'll always offer an interview to disabled candidates who apply through the scheme if they meet the minimum criteria for a job.

We'll ask whether you’d like to be considered under the Disability Confident scheme when you apply.

If we invite you to take part in the recruitment process for any of our jobs, we’ll ask you if you need any reasonable adjustments to enable you to participate.
