Job description
This position performs a variety of skills and semi-skilled functions in support of the dispatch center; receives and dispatches emergency and non-emergency calls from the public, contracted and non-contracted health care facilities and other services; provides Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) / (ETC) and / or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) direction and participates in the work of a dispatcher/call taker and performs other duties as assigned such has Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement (QA/QI of the Communication Center for Local/State and Federal compliance, new hire training.
The fundamental reason this classification exists is to operate Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Computer-Aided Dispatching equipment to quickly and accurately receive and transmit information of an emergency and/or non-emergent nature for Vital Care Ambulance and contracted communities and facilities.
Work involves evaluating incoming calls to determine the appropriate level of EMS assistance required, dispatching units, and transmitting information and messages upon request and/or according to established procedures. Employees are expected to demonstrate extensive communications skills and to exercise considerable judgment under pressure. Work is performed under the general direction of a supervisor who is available for immediate consultation on any situation 24 hours a day, (7) seven days a week.
Requirements:
Knowledge of:
Techniques, procedures and methods used in the operations of a private communication center.
General knowledge of cities and locations of highways and main streets.
Effective interpersonal communication methods and techniques.
Ability to:
- Communicate orally in the English language with the public and co-workers in face-to-face one-on-one setting or using a telephone.
- Remain calm and effective under heavy workloads and in emergency & non-emergency situations.
- Exercise good judgment in emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Determine priorities of emergencies.
- Obtain and act on information quickly and accurately in emergency situations.
- Perceive the full range of the color spectrum, such as working with electronically produced letters, numbers, and/or images on a computerized monitor.
- Work evenings, night, weekends, and holidays to maintain 24-hour coverage of the emergency & non-emergency dispatch system.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Work cooperatively with other City / County employees and the public.
- Comprehend and make references from written materials such as operations manuals and dispatch manuals.
- Learn job-related material through oral instruction and observation, and through structured lecture and reading to effectively perform job duties. This learning takes place in an on-the-job training setting, and in a classroom setting.
- Enter data or information into a terminal, PC or other keyboard device to update information in the EMS Computer-Aided Dispatch system.
- Learn street locations, station locations, and geography of the areas served.
- Learn to operate communications equipment (multi-button telephones, base radios, and computer terminals).
- Learn Dispatch Department organization, policies, and operating procedures.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
- Must be EMD/ETC Communication Dispatcher Certified
- Must possess CPR certification and maintain during employment.
- Must be able to successfully complete Vital Care Ambulance Communications training program.
Acceptable Experience and Training:
a) One year of experience in public contact and clerical work including experience in general typing.
b) Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training is desirable.
c) International Academies of Emergency Dispatch (AEMD) / Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) or Emergency Telecommunicator (ETC). MANDATORY
Specific Duties:
Operates an EMS Computer-Aided Dispatching console consisting of a multi-button telephone system, base radio, and computer terminal.
Answer incoming calls and extracts necessary information from callers.
Evaluates incoming calls to determine the nature and urgency of the call.
Dispatches the appropriate unit(s).
Keeps track of the status and location of all Vital Care Ambulance personnel and vehicles.
Transmits messages and information to Vital Care Ambulance units responding to calls appropriately.
Provides emergency medical self-help to citizens while Ambulance units are en route.
Contacts outside agencies and other City departments to coordinate aid (i.e. ALS Back-up, ALS Intercept, contact the Police department for police assistance when deemed necessary).
Answers routine questions or refers calls to appropriate agencies.
Consults supervisor on non-routine matters.
Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
