Our Purpose
The Tax job family encompasses global roles accountable for the design and implementation of tax strategies, policies and the tax governance framework. It also includes the provision of tax support to Diageo’s business divisions, delivery of projects to build shareholder value, and proactive management and mitigation of key tax risks.
To provide strategic leadership, direction and oversight of the management of Diageo’s tax affairs within Europe and Africa, including the UK, where Diageo is head-quartered. Identify, plan and deliver key tax projects, including controversy management (collaborating closely with Tax Authorities) to generate shareholder value and provide experienced tax support to significant business led initiatives. Build and maintain positive relationships with senior internal customers, external advisors and tax authorities.
Job Dimensions
Working with the Global Head of Tax and a member of the Tax Leadership within Diageo, responsible for setting tax strategy and ensuring the most effective operation of Diageo’s tax organisation. This role will handle the part connected to Europe and Africa, which is well in excess of £1 billion.
You will lead a business partnering team for more than 85 countries and the local entities; including European Partner Markets and JV's, including c.10 direct reports and coordinating the engagement of a network of tax professionals across Europe and Africa.
The role forms part of Diageo’s response to tax digitization challenges across all regions and tax types (direct and indirect) and part of delivering the step change required to ensure Diageo’s tax function remains in line with its peer group and the changing external environment. The Europe & Africa Tax Director role leads and coordinates tax business partners’ activities ensuring the right advice/messaging towards business and tax authority partners; ensuring timely delivery of tax related projects/major audits, and proactively monitoring tax related opportunities. They are a customer for the global tax compliance and reporting and teams, ensuring delivery by the Centre of Excellence of high quality, efficient tax compliance and reporting to the business.
The Europe & Africa Tax Director’s partners include European Tax Authorities, Senior Diageo leaders, regional & market FDs/FCs, Legal and global tax teams.
Key Collaborators:
CFO, Diageo Exec & Senior Leaders – build credible and strong business partnering relationships; act as trusted business advisor to influence strategic decisions
Commercial Directors, General Managers, Brand Teams & Market Finance Directors/Controllers – collaborate with a wide range of business partners to deliver on commercial and operational objectives whilst handling tax risks
Diageo Enterprise Operations teams – establish a close, collaborative and transparent relationship to ensure delivery of high quality, timely, end to end activities and processes
Governance & Change – collaborate on prioritisation and delivery of change programmes both within tax and business change processes such as tax implications of M&A
Governments/Tax Authorities – build and maintain an on-going relationship and dialogue with tax authorities and other governmental bodies in line with our tax policy. As Diageo is headquartered in the UK, HMRC is a key relationship and this role takes the lead in running that relationship across all heads of tax (corporate, VAT, excise, PAYE etc)
External Advisors - build and maintain outstanding relationships with tax advisors to ensure that Diageo has access to the best tax professionals at the right price
Auditors - maintain an effective and open line of communication with Diageo’s internal/external auditors regarding key decision points, risks, transactions and controversies
Industry Forums - participate in industry forums to contribute and learn from other corporates in dealing with changes to the taxation landscape and provide Diageo with a channel to lobby against tax proposals
Accountabilities
Accountabilities will include agreeing and delivering for the assigned markets, Diageo’s cash tax and Effective Tax Rate forecasts for Diageo’s operational and commercial objectives.
Can you lead, plan and coordinate all tax related activities for the area of responsibility like tax controversy, tax compliance, identify and deliver value generative/risk mitigation tax projects, continuous operational improvement and proactively support the business to deliver their strategic objectives.
Will you contribute to the overall Group Finance/Tax strategy through the delivery and running of tax policies and surrounding strategy.
We would love to see you leading internal senior collaborator engagement and maintain a positive relationship with external customers, including advisers and tax authorities.
We would also like to see you promptly identify and handle emerging tax risks or opportunities arising from business/operational change and new tax rules.
Lead, drive and facilitate the implementation and improvement of the target operating model for Finance, including a focus on standardisation and simplification.
Lead, develop and coach your team members including mentor members of Global Tax. Impassioned and enthusiastic approach to the people agenda, working in partnership with the Leadership Team in Tax
The qualifications and experience you will bring will include -
UK technical knowledge in a headquarter environment
Tax or accounting qualification with extensive tax experience (10 years +) including handling tax authority relationships at the highest level
A track record in leadership, mentoring and developing talent
