Communications is comprised of four distinct yet synergistic teams that work collaboratively with a focus on proactive and progressive approaches to: Corporate Reputation & Brand; Commercial Communications; Enterprise & Leadership Communications; and Digital Channels & Content. The Position
This Director, Content Strategy and Social Media is accountable for creating and leading the Novo Nordisk Inc. (NNI) Communications digital and social content strategy across all corporate channels, initiatives and products through editorial strategy and planning. This person is a creative storyteller and strategic thinker who is a social media expert and passionate about content and the role it plays in enhancing the reputation of the Company. This role will collaborate with a wide variety of key stakeholders across the organization to develop content aligned with our purpose and that engages our key stakeholders. This person will oversee our editorial process and work with the NNI Communications team to execute on goals in support of the Company's strategic focus areas and building the corporate brand, while maintaining the highest editorial standards with a focus on expansion and growth.
Relationships
This position reports to the Senior Director, Digital Channels & Content. This position manages at least one full-time employee as well as contractors and suppliers. Key relationships in NN/AS include senior leaders, corporate communications, product communications and Global Communication. This position serves as a subject matter expert and collaborates with all areas within NNI and NNA/S regarding editorial planning, content management and related analytics for NNI Communications-owned digital channels with significant expertise and focus on social media.
Essential Functions
- Content Strategy:
- Leads and oversees the NNI corporate digital content strategy in support of our NNI Comms strategic priorities and reputation strategy, ensuring coordination and consistency across key stakeholders while effectively tell our story and support building the corporate brand
- Serves as a lead content curator and creator as well as supervises the process of other content creators/contributors (direct and indirect reports, i.e., NNI Comms team project owners and agencies) and manages content spanning long-form editorial, campaigns and social and website content, in particular
- Works closely with the Corporate Brand/Media Relations, Executive & Leadership Comms and Commercial Comms teams to leverage content opportunities consistent with our strategy and narrative
- Manages editorial planning and strategy, driving content ideas to the proper channels and setting appropriate project timelines
- Partners with channel strategy team to regularly evaluate the effectiveness of communications and implement new approaches to improve engagement
- Maintains consistency of corporate messaging and acts as a steward of the company brand
- Manages enterprise social networks, including curating and writing organic and paid content for NNI social media channels as well as overseeing community management and social listening processes
- Oversees creating and editing content for the NNI corporate website ensuring consistency and evolving the website into a strategic storytelling vehicle
- Oversees and manages the NNI US corporate blog, including the editorial strategy and writing content
- Manages integrated editorial calendar for the digital content and channels team
- Manages agencies across creative content projects from conceptualization to final execution
- Team Management:
- Helps manage communications budgets; accountable for executing programs within budget parameters
- Optimizes agency spend by looking for opportunities to maximize value
Physical Requirements
15% overnight travel required.
Development of People
Supervisory, ensure that reporting personnel have individual development plans (IDP), with annual goals and measurements that are consistent with the priorities of the business, and that interim reviews are held so that their work is focused on those priorities, and they understand their level of accountability for results and the measurement process. Ensure that the IDP forms include completed learning and aspiration plans and are in place for all reporting personnel to enable the achievement of goals and capability to assume increased levels of responsibility. Manage the application and communication of all Novo Nordisk policies, procedures, and Novo Nordisk Way.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, English or a related discipline required
- Minimum of 12 years of communications, public relations or relevant marketing experience; within the pharmaceutical industry preferred
- 3+ years of direct supervisory experience required
- Experience in a newsroom environment, ideally broadcast television or digital publication or a senior level role within a communications function in a large, heavily-matrixed, multinational company and/or the pharmaceutical industry preferred
- Proficient knowledge of social media environment (paid and organic), digital communications and visual communications
- Experience setting goals around audience growth and associated reporting
- Leadership to appropriately guide, mentor and develop team members
- Experience in managing and working with a communications agency environment preferred
- Demonstrated success in creating strategic direction, plans and proven ability to drive and sustain business improvement and results
- Ability to work under tight timelines, in what can be a stressful environment with limited planning or preparation
- Ability to demonstrate business acumen and work across all levels of the business
- Proven ability to effectively manage projects and influence individuals, teams and stakeholders
- Able to work effectively in a cross-functional, collaborative environment with global as well as regional considerations and, sometimes, political implications
