We are looking for Director of Studies for our Junior summer centres in London and Manchester, running from late 22th June to 17th August 2023.

Job Summary

Language in Action, part of Malvern International, are seeking a qualified, professional and energetic Director of Studies for their Junior Summer School programme in London and Manchester. Details of Position

At Language in Action, we provide students with the English skills and speaking confidence they need to get the most out of their experience in London or Manchester and well beyond.

Our Director of Studies will play a large part in producing a learning experience that exceeds the expectations of the students and clients. They are responsible for all academic aspects of the centre, including managing and developing the teaching team, organising placement tests, scheduling of classes, teaching when necessary, implementing the academic programme and all administration as required. They are responsible for the welfare and safeguarding of all students in the classrooms and during other activities.

Dates:

London: From 22th June to 17th August depending on the centre

Manchester: From 10th July to 21st August

School locations:

London: Bloomsbury and Wembley areas

Manchester: All saints campus

Main Duties

DoS Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Accountable for teacher induction, teacher training and development
  • Attend a training day, or days, before the start of the course, and thereafter attend any staff meetings considered necessary by the management team.
  • Organise placement tests for students on arrival, the marking of tests and the efficient streaming of students into classes based on test results. Please be aware this may well involve evening work.
  • Prepare registers, class lists and timetables, records of work, and all paperwork required by teaching staff to comply with British Council requirements.
  • Assign teachers to classes and classrooms, taking into account each teacher’s skillset, preference and experience
  • Be available to teaching staff during lesson times as well as before and after lessons.
  • Coordinate with the Centre Manager and Activity Manager on matters of timetabling.
  • Take an active role in Group Leader welcome meetings as the company’s on-site academic representative and remain available to Group Leaders at specified and agreed times.
  • Monitor teachers' timekeeping and appearance, and to take appropriate action when necessary.
  • Ensure regular lesson observations and constructive feedback take place.
  • Arrange teaching cover or teach when teachers are absent from work
  • Maintain accurate records of the hours worked by teachers and pass this information to the Centre Manager/Academic Manager on a weekly basis.
  • Hold regular staff meetings for teachers. Ensure that major points are included in the Minutes of the meeting and filed for future reference.
  • Ensure teachers are up to date with administrative procedures including registers, progress reports and certificates.
  • Manage teaching materials, office supplies and resources. Ensure that teachers have access to materials and technology required for their lessons.
  • Ensure the academic element of LiA notice boards and signs around the centre are prepared and updated so that students, leaders and staff are kept informed of the academic programme and that a LiA academic presence is visible on campus.
  • Monitor student numbers so that teachers are deployed in an efficient manner. Maintain class sizes at optimal levels in agreement with the Academic Manager.
  • Ensure that teachers are aware of activity programmes and use any excursion preparation material available before students go on excursions.
  • Take part in social activities and events and motivate Academic team to participate in activities, excursions and as well as LiA events.

Safeguarding and General duties and responsibilities

  • Act in a professional and appropriate manner with all of LiA/Malvern International’s agents, clients, students, host campus staff, and LiA staff
  • Undergo online training for Prevent and Advanced Safeguarding Training (Level 2) before the commencement of employment.
  • Read, be fully conversant with, and act in accordance with the staff handbook, company policies, relevant Child Protection documents and all risk assessments prior to the start of the period of employment.
  • Ensure that the company’s health and safety guidelines are followed on and around campus.
  • Ensure that teachers and students adhere to the code of conduct laid down by the company
  • Be involved in any activity necessary for the smooth running of the centre and to improve students’ experience.
  • Be a positive and professional role model for the teachers and students, representative of the core values of Language in Action
  • Induct Teachers on Safeguarding and Health & Safety policies.
  • Liaise with Centre Manger on Fire drills to be conducted at school premises and make sure all safety rules are respected and clear to all students.
  • Make sure students are supervised and corridors are patrolled during lessons and during breaks, cover for teachers if necessary.
  • Work in accordance with Safeguarding policy and apply it to all activities.
  • Liaise with teachers to make sure all students are present in class and report to CM any absence, according to absence procedure.
  • Fulfilment of all the duties and responsibilities of Safeguarding level 2.

Qualifications

  • A university degree
  • TEFLQ certification: Cambridge DELTA / Trinity DipTESOL or equivalent

Statutory Requirements

  • Undergo an Enhanced DBS disclosure check or overseas equivalent
  • Eligibility to work in UK (the applicant must either have a UK Passport/Work Permit/Work VISA)

Experience and Knowledge

  • At least 3 years’ EFL teaching experience
  • Experience of academic management
  • Very good ICT skills, e.g. production of reports, correspondence, inputting / updating information
  • Operate relevant equipment / ICT packages (e.g. Word, Excel, Internet, IWBs, Smartboards)
  • Residential summer school experience

Desirable:

  • Experience with British Council Inspection
  • Proven native speaker level competency (e.g. Cambridge Proficiency Exam).
  • Public speaking experience

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

The ability to make decisions quickly and calmly; communicates clearly and proactively; ability to lead a team of people effectively; ability to prioritise and multi-task during busy periods; problem solving; managerial ability and experience with residential summer school, professional, positive attitude to teaching and management; flexibility; diplomacy and tact; enjoys working with young learners. Ability to work under pressure and in a stressful environment; proven organizational, administrative and interpersonal skills; able to follow and implement standardized LiA company policies.

Hours of Work

Working hours will vary from centre to centre according to student numbers, frequency of intakes and staffing structures but a typical working week will be 40 contract hours, 5 days per week. Weekend/late evening work may be required.

Salary and benefits

Weekly salary: £636 (gross rate).

Holiday pay: paid at end of contract and accrued in accordance with UK laws and regulations

Room and Board: The position of Director of Studies is residential. Full board accommodation including single room, breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided.
