POSITION TITLE: DIRECTOR OF ADULT EDUCATION, ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND TEACHING ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (TESOL) PROGRAMS
DEPARTMENT: ADMINISTRATION
REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF TEACHING AND LEARNING
SUMMARY: This Supervisor works with the Director of Teaching and Learning. This individual has the responsibility for coordinating the programs and instructional activities within the district that fall within Adult Education Programs [Adult Basic Education (ABE), Adult Continuing Education (ACE) and Credit Diploma Program (CDP) Driver’s Education Program (DEP)], Alternative Education Programs and TESOL Programs. This individual will work closely with Central Office and Building Administrators to ensure the ongoing effectiveness and growth of the programs. This person will also work closely with relevant curriculum committees.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
Coordinate the development and implementation of Adult Education Programs, Alternative Education Programs and TESOL Programs.
Plan, coordinate and promote community-based Adult Education Programs.
Plan, coordinate and supervise Alternative Education Programs.
Coordinate all aspects of Alternative Education Programs with school administrators, school staff, alternative education staff, transportation staff and non-school facilities.
Develop, implement and evaluate community-based goals and objectives for the Adult Education Programs.
Develop and offer Adult Education Programs reflective of the community’s needs and interests and legislative mandates.
Develop and manage the budget for Adult Education Programs and Alternative Education Programs.
Provide appropriate supervision and evaluation for all programs within the area of Adult Education Programs and Alternative Education Programs.
Plan and provide professional development activities at the building and district level.
Attend meetings sponsored by the State Department of Education.
Supervise TESOL Program staff.
Develop and manage the budget for the TESOL Program.
Hire, supervise and evaluate all Adult Education Program, Alternative Education Program and TESOL Program staff.
Attend relevant school, district and professional meetings.
Analyze multiple student data, including data on common assessments as a means for improving instruction.
Assist colleagues in identifying and collecting student data.
Participate in district-wide activities, in-service and committees as appropriate.
Write grant proposals and manage grant funds.
Performs such other tasks and assumes responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Teaching and Learning and/or the Superintendent of Schools.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: TO PERFORM THIS JOB SUCCESSFULLY, AN INDIVIDUAL MUST BE ABLE TO PERFORM EACH ESSENTIAL DUTY SATISFACTORILY. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Master’s Degree and/or Sixth Year Certificate.
Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS:
Intermediate Administrative Certification.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, employees and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions and percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and concrete variables.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Basic knowledge and experience with standard hardware and software applications. Ability to use computer for E-mail, word processing, accounting, databases and presentations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff and the community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely in verbal communication. Ability to convey ideas clearly and concisely in written format. Ability to perform duties with awareness of, and to adhere to, all district requirements and Board of Education policies and the State of Connecticut Educator Standards.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. Some occasional lifting or moving is required which normally would not exceed ten (10) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Some driving is required. Frequent writing is required. Some extended hours and multiple demands from several people are frequently required of the employee.

The noise level in the office work environment is usually very quiet. When working in a school environment the noise level may become moderate to loud.
Salary: $142,800/year
