Join Our Team as Director of Living Collections!
ZSEA (Zoological Society of East Anglia) is a dynamic charity that oversees the management of Banham Zoo and Africa Alive, and we're currently undergoing an exciting period of change. Our mission is to connect communities to nature for conservation, education, and well-being. We aim to make a measurable impact on local, national, and global biodiversity, while empowering individuals to make positive changes in their lives and communities through the connection between nature and well-being.
By 2025, we have set ambitious goals through our Five-Year Pledge: to safeguard 15 species from extinction, enhance the well-being of 15,000 individuals, and inspire 150,000 people to deepen their connection with nature.
To help us achieve these goals, we are seeking a passionate and inspirational leader to join our team as the Director of Living Collections. Reporting to the Zoological Director, you will have a pivotal role in curating the animal collections and driving operational excellence across Banham Zoo and Africa Alive. Supported by the Head of Living Collections, Animal Managers, and a dedicated team of animal keepers, you will shape the future of our living collections.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and deliver the ZSEA Animal Collection Plan for Banham Zoo and Africa Alive, including sourcing and curating stock, and establishing husbandry and breeding guidelines in compliance with industry standards.
- Ensure the highest standards of animal health and welfare across both sites.
- Maintain and review facilities to meet UK Zoo Licensing requirements.
- Uphold ZSEA's commitment to excellence and regulatory compliance in animal management.
- Lead and inspire the animal collections teams, fostering a culture of trust, respect, and support.
- Build positive relationships within ZSEA and with external stakeholders.
- Manage budgetary responsibilities for staffing and operational needs of the Living Collections.
Qualifications and Skills:
- BSc in a relevant area or equivalent experience.
- Proven experience in managing and developing large teams in a major zoo setting.
- In-depth knowledge of current animal husbandry practices in a zoological collection environment.
- Familiarity with UK Zoo licensing regulations.
- Excellent organizational and prioritization abilities.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to challenge ideas respectfully.
- Collaborative and respectful approach to management and relationship building.
- Effective problem-solving skills and the capacity to assist others in resolving challenges.
- Calm and composed under pressure, with a high degree of empathy and understanding.
