Department Information


The Indiana University Bloomington Walter Center for Career Achievement, a division of the newly established Academic Engagement and Student Experience Team, provides top-quality career education programming and services to Indiana University College of Arts & Sciences students to help them transfer their diverse passions and talents into successful and rewarding careers. The Director of External Relations directly oversees a team of professionals charged creating meaningful opportunities for students to connect with full-time and internship opportunities, build early-career professional networks, and explore career interests.

Job Summary


Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Co-Leads the day-to-day operations of the Walter Center for Career Achievement in collaboration with the Director of Career Education.
  • Sets goals for the Walter Center team that align with larger organization strategy and priorities.
  • Cultivates a culture of trust, innovation and professionalism in alignment with the Center's values.
  • Hires, trains, evaluates, and develops a team of external relations professionals charged with creating connections with employers and alumni that produce high-quality opportunities for students to engage with full-time and internship opportunities, build early-career professional networks, and explore their career interests. Responsible for external relations team success and development.
  • Sets external relations strategy.
  • Identifies programming and employer/alumni outreach plans, goals, and objectives, and evaluates team success.
  • Oversees external relations operations and programming, which include the Walter Center Success Network (an alumni-to-student networking platform), Handshake (the campus job and internship posting and application software) on campus interviews, career fairs, and alumni/employer networking events. Responsible for ensuring quality and effectiveness of external relations operations and programming.
  • Serves as a member of the Academic Engagement and Student Experience Leadership Team; responsible for setting and implementing shared vision and goals for the College of Arts and Science undergraduate experience.
  • Collaborates with leaders in other undergraduate student services functions (Academic Advising, Recruiting, International Programs) to develop and execute collaborative strategies that facilitate a transformational, well-integrated, seamless student experience.

General Responsibilities

  • Provides highest level of operational leadership and coordination of assigned staff members to define career services methodologies and standards; provides direction and guidance on high priority career services projects/initiatives.
  • Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives, including managing project timelines/deliverables and developing resource plans for multi-project/multi-phase career services initiatives.
  • Conducts a variety of personnel actions to include, but not limited to hiring, promotion, performance management, and dismissal.
  • Manages high level assignments and allocation of career services resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives that involve staff in other departments/areas/teams; may coordinate large-scale career services projects with a wide audiences in support of academic initiatives.
  • Makes budgetary recommendations/proposals based on resource needs and ensures cost containment.
  • Researches and stays up-to-date on new industry career services standards, technologies, policies, and procedures; responsible for the implementation of new protocols/procedures to address business needs.
  • Works collaboratively with other career services leaders across departments in recommending standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures.
  • Prepares management reports and summaries for senior administration, executive, steering and advisory committees; acts as advisor to executive committees; serves on various university committees, communities of practice, and task forces related to career services.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in business, counseling, or related field

Preferred

  • Master's degree in related field

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 4 years in career services, business, human resources, counseling, or related field
  • 1 year of management experience in relevant field

Working Conditions / Demands


This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
