The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (CLAS) Office of Advising and Student Services provides academic advising services to all pre-majors and freshmen in CLAS. The primary purpose of the Office is to provide academic advising using a developmental model approach. Academic Advisors work with students so that students develop the knowledge, skills and personal accountability needed to explore their academic and co-curricular options, evaluate and track their own progress toward graduation, access support and enrichment services, and understand and follow university policies and timelines. Advising services encompass a range of interactions with students from individual and small group meetings to email and social media, among others.
The Office provides support to all CLAS students, including new first-year and new transfer students, first-generation college students and current transfer students, interventions for at-risk students and referrals to appropriate support services. Advisors in the office also support the CLAS learning communities in several ways and may teach Freshman Seminar courses.
Services for the entire College include: coordinating advising for new student orientation, coordinating the College 49er Rebound initiative, teaching the Student Success Seminar for 49er Rebound or Prospect for Success, providing General Education checks, serving as the first point of contact for new students and existing students transitioning to majors inside or outside of the College.

Primary Purpose of Position
The Associate Director oversees the day-to-day operations of advising in the CLAS Office of Advising and Student Services and provides leadership for the advising staff in the office. The Associate Director assigns the advising case loads for 5 advisors in the office and coordinates additional responsibilities related to the overall mission of the Office. The Associate Director also informs advising processes and practices within CLAS and serves as an information resource to students and faculty and staff, which include Department Chairs and Associate Chairs, Undergraduate Coordinators, faculty advisors, and professional advisors in the college. The Associate Director also serves in the Advising Systems Specialist role.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The Associate Director assists the Director of Advising to ensure the academic advisor implements a developmental advising model that involves a tailored series of interactions and communications using advising tools and systems designed to address the specific needs of the students served by the CLAS Office of Advising and Student Services. This tailored, developmental approach acknowledges that individual student profiles and those of student cohorts may differ not only at the onset of the student academic experience, but throughout their academic career. The Associate Director must have the experience, education, and background necessary to serve the educational function of an advisor, however he or she is doing so in a context developed by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and in collaboration with the Advising Director and other collegues. Specific functional areas include:
- Academic advising
- Orientation and outreach
- Targeted advising
- Instruction (Include teaching if part of position responsibilities)
- Other duties
Minimum Education/Experience
- Candidate must have completed a Master’s degree, preferably in a Liberal Arts and Sciences discipline.
- Candidate must have at least two years of experience involving student academic advising in a higher education setting.
- Candidate must also be attentive to detail, possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize while multi-tasking and manage tasks in an efficient and timely manner.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal problem-solving skills are a must. Ability to interact effectively with advisees, staff and faculty required.
- A viable candidate must comprehend and abide by federal and university student confidentiality requirements.
- Proficient use of computers (Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Google Suite) is necessary.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- The Associate Director must have at least three to five years of advising experience after the attainment of the Master’s degree and at least 2 years of supervisory experience is preferred.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills are a must. A working knowledge of Banner and EAB is a plus.
- Experience teaching freshman seminar or a student success seminar is also preferred. Experience interacting with faculty and administrators is preferred.
