Here at YUSU (York University Students Union), we have an exciting job opportunity for someone to join our Advice and Support team as an Academic and Welfare Development Coordinator.
About the Role:
Together, YUSU and the Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) provide representation, opportunities and run services for all 22,000 students at the University of York.
A key part of our services is to provide free, professional, independent and confidential advice and support to students at the University of York. YUSU’s Advice and Support Centre (ASC) is the Students' Union's one-stop shop for any student with academic or welfare concerns or experiencing difficulties with student life. The Graduate Students’ Association (GSA), specialise in postgraduate information and advice.
Working together we are recruiting an Academic and Welfare Development Coordinator to provide students with information, advice, support and representation on a wide range of academic and welfare issues. This is an exciting time to join us. Both YUSU and the GSA are discussing the potential benefits of a single students’ union and how we can deepen our partnership to further improve our collective advice provision for all students.
Employed by YUSU, but initially working predominantly in the GSA, your work will range from in-depth case work and supporting students through University processes and policies, to one-off appointments. With a particular focus on Postgraduate students through the GSA’s advice service, your work will cover anything from academic progression and appeals issues to student misconduct or complaints. Your work is key in helping all students understand and exercise their rights, and to navigate challenging times or unforeseen events.
With responsibility for your own case work, you will work in a matrix managed model with line management from the GSA CEO on postgraduate matters, and support and guidance on general advice and service provision from the YUSU Advice and Welfare Manager. You’ll work closely with student voice and representation colleagues in both organisations to ensure that the lessons from our advice work inform the Unions’ policy and influence work. The role also includes working closely with key University services and departments and developing and maintaining working relationships with local referral partners and organisations.
Applicants should be self-motivated with a proactive and flexible approach. The post holders will be able to present information clearly and concisely in writing and verbally, and be able to develop a clear working knowledge of a range of University policies and procedures. An understanding of advice work and ability to deal sensitively with enquiries from a diverse range of individuals, and manage potentially difficult or emotional situations calmly and confidently, is important.
