We have an exciting and unique opportunity to join our dynamic and ambitious Youth Engagement team as a Detached Youth Worker. We have four 18-month fixed term posts and we are looking for nationally qualified Youth Workers (or qualified in a related field) to join this newly established area of work.
Swindon Borough Council has been successful in securing Safer Streets Funding Round 4 and part of the bid is funding to establish a Detached Youth Work team. The mandatory focus for the bids is to tackle Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) and issues relating to Violence Against Women & Girls (VAWG). Safer Streets funding is provided by the Home Office and allocated to Police & Crime Commission boundaries (OPCC).
Your next role
You will be required undertake detached work directly with young people in a variety of settings, wherever young people meet and develop their social education. To identify, target and work with young people who are involved in anti-social behaviour and related disorder to identify their needs and introduce a programme of activities to provide new positive opportunities and experiences. Primarily, but not exclusively, the work will take place on the street, but also in parks, cafés, shopping centres, and other spaces young people access.
To engage with young people at their “teachable, reachable” moments which will include custody, admission to A&E, and other opportunities. This will involve working with and as part of a multi-agency response to young people’s needs.
To succeed in this role, you will hold a specialist qualification (at least level 4) in a related field e.g. Youth Work, Youth Justice, Mental Health etc. It would be preferable if this qualification was a professional level youth work qualification. You will need demonstrable working knowledge of working with young people, current knowledge of youth cultures and the issues that affect young people.. You will also need resilience, skills in risk management, the ability to manage your own time well and the ability to prioritise your work.
We are looking for the right person who is able to:
- Regular evening and weekend work are required for this role.
- Work in a variety of settings which will include on the streets and in parks (i.e. detached settings), Custody suite at Gablecross Police Station, A&E department GWH, schools, home visits, and other settings that provide a “reachable, teachable” moments to work with young people.
- To work effectively with individuals as well as small and large groups of young people.
