The Opportunity:
Solvest is seeking a highly skilled and creative Senior Designer to join our dynamic team. As a Senior Designer, you will play a critical role in supporting the design and development of large renewable energy projects in Solvest’s operating area, through detailed power modelling, accurate costing, and financial projections. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growth of renewable energy and make a positive impact on the environment.

This is a hybrid position that will require the successful candidate to work from our office located in Cobourg, Ontario 1-2 days per week, while working from home the remainder of the week.
Employment Status: Permanent Full Time – 40 hours per week
Starting Wage: $40 - $50 per hour (based on experience) + annual profit-sharing bonus based on company performance
Leave Entitlement: Four weeks of vacation (20 days) + 5 paid sick days per year

Job Description (not inclusive of all duties):
- Support the Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) and Chief Business Development Officer (CBDO) in developing commercial and utility-scale photovoltaic (PV), energy storage and microgrid opportunities.
- Liaise with external parties such as manufacturing representatives and product engineers to learn about new PV and energy storage technologies that could be used to enhance Solvest’s product offerings.
- Support the identification of new service and product offerings and work with the Business Development team to turn these into real company offerings.
- Liaise with clients and Owner's Engineers for renewable energy systems.
- Utilize various software platforms including Helioscope, Aurora Solar, RETScreen Expert, and PVSyst to design PV systems, modelling the annual generation, and financial return.
- Design microgrid projects consisting of fossil fuel generation plants, renewable energy sources, and various forms of energy storage. Use HOMER Pro, HOMER Grid, and other microgrid design tools to simulate and optimize such projects.
- Ensure that all designs comply with the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), component parameters, and company design standards.
- Produce both technical and client (non-technical) proposals for renewable energy projects including detailed design, quotes, performance reports, and financial analysis.
- Design and optimize behind-the-meter and grid-zero systems involving solar and battery equipment by analyzing baseload and power quality data.
- Support the Business Development team in technical writing aspects for tenders or corporate proposals.
- Support the Business Development team in the design of “PowerBoxes”. These are large-scale off-grid projects including turnkey containerized solar and battery solutions.
- Provide project costing for unique jobs in isolated northern communities including materials, labour, site preparation, transportation, and logistics for a wide range of renewable energy projects.
- Analyze datasets of off-grid fuel generators to create accurate daily power requirements.
- Support the drafting of responses to RFP and other competitive tenders.
Required Skills/Qualifications:
- Degree or diploma in engineering, technical design or a related field preferred (or equivalent work experience).
- 3-5 years of experience in a similar role, specifically in the solar and/or energy storage industry.
- Proficient in design software (AutoCAD, Revit, Helioscope, Aurora Solar, RETScreen Expert, and PVSyst or similar) and Google Suite.
- Strong understanding of solar industry principles.
- Excellent visual and spatial awareness, with a keen eye for aesthetics and design details.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Knowledge of design principles, creating renewable energy proposals and financial analysis.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Ability to stay motivated while working remotely.
