Job description
Cornerstone are looking for a highly creative and versatile Designer to join our award-winning Art department.
You’ll breathe new life into our fiction and non-fiction books, creating new looks for established brand authors and helping to turn little-known stories into tomorrow’s bestsellers.
About Cornerstone
At Cornerstone our publishing is truly for everyone, whether you are looking for reportage and memoir that shine a light on who we are, the most exciting contemporary science fiction and fantasy, the key titles in self-development, memoirs from national treasures, award-winning literary fiction or unputdownable crime.
Authors in our division include: non-fiction blockbusters such as Will Smith, Malorie Blackman, Banksy and Barbra Streisand, repeat fiction brands such as Taylor Jenkins Reid, Lisa Jewell, Harlan Coben, Tom Hanks, James Patterson and Robert Harris and literary stars such as Amor Towles and Booker-nominated Richard Powers, as well as Katy Hessel, author of Waterstones Book of the Year ‘22 The Story of Art Without Men. Our imprints include: Century, The Cornerstone Press, Hutchinson Heinemann, #Merky Books, in collaboration with Stormzy, Del Rey and Penguin.
The Opportunity
Joining a team of 9 and reporting into the Art Director you’ll be responsible for working on book covers across a range of fiction, non-fiction, hardback and paperback books.
You can expect to be inputting into weekly covers meetings with the publishing teams and working closely with colleagues in Production, Editorial, Sales and Marketing and Publicity.
Your unrivalled imagination will enable you to bring new ideas to life and you won’t shy away from taking creative risks to achieve fantastic results with each project. You’ll work super creativity and think outside the box, montaging images and playing with colour, figures, fonts and more to produce the best covers in the business.
What you’ll bring
You don’t need to have worked in publishing, or know exactly how to produce a book cover, but experience in a similar field or in a design studio for an entertainment brand would be beneficial. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated but also collaborative and flexible and able to manage their time effectively.
You’ll have an exceptional design eye, strong communication skills and creative flair. You will be able to quickly translate briefs and business needs into engaging visuals and be comfortable working across a range of styles – from literary to commercial projects.
Importantly, you’ll be fluent in the use of the Adobe Creative Suite (particularly InDesign and Photoshop). Other programmes we can provide training and support with.
How to apply
If this sounds like your next role, please apply with your CV and short cover letter by Sunday 13th August. We’d love to know about your passion for design and why you’d like to join Cornerstone.
With your application, please submit a PDF that showcases your top three favourite pieces of work and your ability to use Photoshop and InDesign creatively. You may also provide a link to a fuller portfolio or your website.
What you can expect from us:
Salary: Up to £32,000, depending on how your skills and experience align with the role, plus bonus and benefits
