Job description

Do you want to make a positive difference to Sheffield and its residents? Looking for a new challenge leading one of the largest in-house construction design teams in local government?
Do you put people at the heart of what you do, living our values of openness and honesty and working together to get things done?
If so, then this could be your next exciting role.

A unique opportunity has arisen to apply your expertise, knowledge, and skills as Head of Design for the Capital Delivery Service. We are looking for a highly motivated self-starter with a desire to make a difference.

The Capital Delivery Service employs 100 staff in a variety of management, technical and professional roles and is responsible for a wide range of capital building and infrastructure projects and programmes. These cover minor capital maintenance works to major new build and area regeneration schemes ranging from £100k to £50m. The Service is split into five separate teams: Project Delivery, Design, Procurement and Cost Management, Framework Management, and a capital Programme Management Office.

You will need the appetite to work collaboratively, leading a professional construction multi-disciplinary design consultancy. The Design Team in the Capital Delivery Service at Sheffield City Council consists of a strong team of nearly 40 individuals who sit within Architectural, Landscape, Building Services, Civils and Structures, Health and Safety and Work Assurance. You will be accountable for the resourcing and development of design outputs and leading and embedding industry best practice across design management for the Service.

We are investing in our workforce and are promoting opportunities to our under-represented groups. We value equality, diversity and inclusion and are focused on increasing the diversity of our workforce, particularly the number of Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic, Disabled and LGBTQ+ people, so that our teams reflect the communities in the city we serve. We are also supporting staff with unpaid caring responsibilities to work flexibly.

It is a great time to join us and we welcome your application.

Under the Disability Confident Scheme, disabled applicants, who meet the essential criteria of this job, are guaranteed an interview.

Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the Council, including reduced hour contracts, working part time or as a job share.

  • Shortlisting – 26th July
  • Assessment Centre– W/C 9th August (Online/in person at Sheffield Town Hall)
  • Final Interview is 15th August (in person at Sheffield Town Hall)
