Principal Design Engineer

Tods Technology are looking to recruit for a Principal Design Engineer, to be based at our Engineering Hub, Dorchester, Dorset.

Role:

Undertake design tasks as defined by the Engineering Manager using computer aided design (CATIA V5 CAD) and PLM data management tools. In conjunction with the Engineering Manager, define design methodology and provide design solutions that satisfy design to cost and design for manufacture best practice.

Assist Engineering Manager with the day-to-day management of the Engineering team including workload and resource planning, support to Business Development activities, design project control, maintenance of standards and processes related to Engineering in accordance with the Tods Defence Business Management System to ensure clear alignment with external customer requirements and compliance with AS9100 quality standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare technical proposals and quotations.
  • Technically direct Design Engineers and sub-contractors.
  • Develop designs into a production ready productthat meets the requirement specification. Liaise with internal stakeholders and ensure that the Engineering process is adhered to.
  • Check and approve drawings, CAD models and Change Notes and other documents as per the Engineering procedures approved signatory list.
  • Ensure all design activity is carried out to company procedures or overriding customer requirements.
  • Ensure project conformity to requirements.
  • As a Project Owner, you will be responsible for design file management, and where no Project Manager is assigned project resource management, project schedule adherence and project budget management.
  • Continually develop and increase knowledge of technology developments including design techniques, material, and process developments to support and drive innovation and business growth.
  • Support composite development activity, and provide support to other business functions as required, notably Procurement and Operations.
  • Technical Query support.
  • Assist Engineering Manager with:
  • Day to day management of the Engineering team including workload and resource planning, support to Business Development activities, design project control, maintenance of standards and processes.
  • Engage with the cross functional management teams in the business and contribute to the overall performance and well-being of the Company.
  • Manage project owners to ensure the delivery of project monthly reports that ensure project team completes/up-dates requirement for design file management, management of project resource, project schedule adherence and project budget management.
  • Co-ordination and training of team to ensure individuals continue to develop skillsets required in their role and for on-going development.
  • Ensure the Engineering department is compliant with the required standards, for example, that the relevant AS9100 standards and underlying Engineering procedures are adhered too.
  • Ensure compliance with Company/external procedures recording accurate data on to company documentation and systems.
  • Ensure administration is completed with sign-off as required.
  • Support Company with Audits and related actions as required.
  • Support as required with monitoring project costs and control agreed KPIs.
  • Other tasks as required in support of company strategy as directed by the Technical Director.

Personal Requirements:

  • Relevant Engineering degree or equivalent experience and further professional training.
  • Proven design engineering experience including project ownership.
  • Complete understanding of CATIA V5 CAD and design office procedures.
  • Strong and relevant knowledge of composite materials and ability to generate design solutions to meet technical specifications.
  • Ability to gain UK MoD Security Clearance
  • Ability to make instinctive design decisions with limited information.
  • Ability to direct and influence the performance of less experienced employees.
  • Ability to write and approve reports and provide design-based input to engineering review meetings.
  • Computer literate.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, internally and externally.
  • A good team player with a flexible attitude to workload.

Tods is a growing business and there will be some limited travel involved to our site on Portland. The role is permanent, offering full time flexible hours of 37 per week. We do offer a 4-day working week.

The salary offered will be totally dependant on the successful candidates relevant experience.
