Job Title: Design Engineer
Business Area: Lucy Electric
Location: Thame, UK
Job Purpose
Support new product developments or special projects, in collaboration with the Laboratory and Industrialisation teams, to meet Engineering department objectives. Bring professional expertise and knowledge as a subject matter expert in all aspects of MV switchgear.
Job Dimensions
The role will be based at Thame, Oxfordshire, in the UK, with the possibility of travel to other Lucy overseas sites.
Key Accountabilities
- Undertake the design and development of allocated switchgear projects, under the direction of the lead Engineer. Accountable for the application of DFx (Cost, Manufacture, Assembly, Test) to all product developments. Prepare and schedule internal and external testing: supervise as appropriate, working with the Laboratories team. Striving to achieve solutions to the best cost, quality, and time to market.
- Accountable for working with all other Engineering teams to resolve product issues; working with all other teams in Lucy Electric to ensure effective problem solving - with a focus on meeting customer needs and profitability.
- Accountable for determining plans and mechanisms to deliver against your own objectives including ongoing problem solving, within budget.
- Accountable for product costs. Cost analysis.
- Accountable for maintenance of all test results and acting upon them.
- Accountable for production of design documentation and maintenance of project files.
- Accountable for correct finished product BOM using Engineering systems to capture as appropriate.
- Keep the development of unique parts to a minimum and focus on the standardisation/ rationalisation of parts where possible.
- Accountable for proactive continuous improvement of the product/cost ratio and utilisation of new processes and technologies to enhance the quality, safety and cost effectiveness of the finished product.
- Seek development opportunities and experiment with new approaches and practices to stay current in the NPD environment. Develop Engineering tools, standards, processes and supporting information, to improve the efficiency and productivity of the department/ business.
- Guarantee the delivery of the business strategy, by ensuring you manage delivery of your own objectives and prepare for your regular performance management meetings. Ensure planning/preparation for monthly one to ones.
- Strive to improve the overall financial and key performance indicators of the business.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills
Job Specific Skills/ Competencies (Essential):
- HNC Mechanical and / or Electrical Engineering or similar qualifications
- Demonstrable expert 3D CAD skills (Unigraphics NX).
- Experience of product design in the engineering field and good understanding engineering drawings.
- Driven to apply DFx experience (Cost, Manufacture, Assembly, Test) to all product developments.
- Excellent problem-solving skills. Shows initiative and creativity.
- Evidence of technical expertise.
- Comprehensive knowledge of material strengths.
- Experience of product BoM cost management.
- Capable of retrieving and analysing data.
- Good research skills for continuous improvement projects.
- PC literate – use of MS Office packages (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
- Understanding of relevant IEC standards.
- Demonstrable knowledge of development / engineering processes and procedures.
- Experience of PDM/PLM tools (Teamcenter), BoM control and engineering change process.
- Understand the supply chain.
- Good knowledge of quality systems.
- Demonstrate commercial awareness (can see the bigger picture).
Job Specific Skills/ Competencies (Desirable):
- Degree equivalent in Mechanical and / or Electrical engineering or similar.
- Knowledge/ understanding of medium voltage switchgear.
- Experience in Switchgear design.
- Sheet metal part design experience (including pressed parts).
- Molded part design experience.
- Advanced problem-solving skills (e.g., FMEA)
- Project planning and execution including reporting and risk management.
- Jig/fixture design experience.
