Job description
The Company:
Founded in 1969, IAE are the UK’s largest and leading manufacturer of livestock housing and handling equipment, equestrian stabling, industrial fencing and shelters. The company remains to be owned by the same family who set it up 52 years ago, and now employs over 450 people, which we are committed to investing in. IAE is based on a purpose built, 36-acre site which is situated on the edge of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire. The state-of-the-art production facility features an extensive range of automated processes, ranging from robotic welding technology to automated material handling. In addition to this, IAE also houses its own galvanising facility and is currently developing an adjoining site which will incorporate an additional 103,000 ft² of production space, as well as an in-house learning and demonstration facility.
The Role:
IAE require a Student Design Engineer to join the company. Working with both the drafting/drawing office and the Product Development team, the Student Design Engineer will be assisting in the redevelopment of existing products and the design and development of new products. Drafting of standard and bespoke products and components will also be an element of the role, as will be the use of Excel spreadsheets for carrying out calculations involved in the design/configuration of products or costing of new designs. The design of jigs to suit products manufactured by automated/robotic welding cells may also be part of the function, and the testing or analysis of components using simulation/FAE software will also form part of the role.
The Candidate:
The successful candidate will have an educational background in Mechanical or Design Engineering (or similar discipline) and have excellent CAD drafting skills, both 2D and 3D (ideally SolidWorks, FEA experience would also be an advantage) and display a good understanding of mechanics, mechanisms, mechanical engineering and welded steel structures. The candidate will need to display creativity and an aptitude for problem solving, as well as having an excellent eye for detail whilst exhibiting a pro-active attitude. Any experience in agriculture or agricultural engineering would be of benefit but is by no means essential. The candidate must be able to efficiently manage their time whilst juggling multiple tasks.
Experience Gained:
The Student Design Engineer will benefit from first-hand experience of working in a busy, professional drawing office, contributing to the output of both the drafting and development functions. Producing manufacturing drawings to enable manufacture in our onsite facility and developing jigs and fixtures to aid in the manufacture of these products and components, the candidate will gain a thorough understanding of the manufacture of fabricated steel products. Working on both small-scale drafting tasks and being responsible larger design projects for which they will have ownership, the right candidate can expect to develop their CAD drafting ability, their ability to design to a brief and their appreciation of design for manufacture.
