About the Opportunity

As Deputy Head of Planning you will play a key role in the development of the team adopting new technologies, strategies, and tools to deliver our projects. As we look to the future you will play a pivotal role, and as such have a vision, in how we will drive the success of our Transportation Mission, in the spirit of Challenging Today. Reinventing Tomorrow.

Reporting to the Head of Planning for Project Services Solutions, you will work closely with the other Head of Capabilities, Portfolio Leads and peers in other Operating Units to develop Communities of Practice and common ways of working. You will actively support the Head of Planning to grow, develop, and lead our diverse team of Planning Managers and Planners, encouraging Early Years careers, internal development of individuals and where required external hires, to create a team with diverse skills that complement the Transportation portfolio.

As the Deputy Head of Planning, you will assist the Head of Planning for implementing and delivering superior project performance.
From inception all projects need a road map to ensure successful delivery, this road map is the schedule. The schedule once developed is the projects primary guide as it contains the scope and time frame acceptable for delivery to your client, it is the cornerstone of project controls. You will play a key role in supporting the development and growth our planning discipline and ensuring plans are in place on projects to make our work in Systems and Cost is more efficient, flexible and to identify desired goals, reduce risks and avoid missed deadlines.

Also working closely with the Head of Project management you will actively support and encourage the development of the wider project management community to ensure a good understanding of programme and planning activities. You will help to foster a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement, demonstrating adaptability and commitment to supporting others across the team in delivering a high-quality service.

This is an exciting and challenging role where you will actively manage and grow a team, drive D4.0 into our projects, whilst balancing and recruiting resources to manage our business need.

All locations will be considered for this role, it will require the ability to travel on occasion in line with business needs.

Responsibilities

  • Establish project schedules as the norm on all P&PS Projects. Working towards Primavera P6 being the standard platform for scheduling, and where not appropriate working with Portfolio and project leads to agree alternatives where P6 is agreed to be unsuitable.
  • Liaise with Portfolio Leads, Project Managers and peers in other OUs to bring together “best in class” solutions from across the Jacobs business and external sources.
  • Support the Head of Planning to lead and grow the Planning team to provide the level of service required in P&PS.
  • Provide training and mentorship to develop your team’s skills to allow them to provide clear, accurate project schedules that will naturally feed into data analytics.
  • Providing direct support to projects and Project Managers
  • Actively work with the Head of Planning to develop standard ways of work through established Communities of Practice.
  • Develop tools and working methods to ensure smooth flow of information between all data sources as part of the new data analysis approach.
  • Proactively work to deliver consistent reporting processes inside P&PS projects and ensure that key messages are effectively communicated.
  • Support Head of Planning to develop standard Earned Value procedures, and where necessary, work with Project teams to develop bespoke procedures where contract requirements deem necessary.
  • Drive consistent and best planning practices across a portfolio of projects and frameworks.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
  • You will be an expert user of Primavera P6
  • You will be proficient in fully resource and cost loaded techniques
  • Be seen as a proactive member of Projects, understanding the key requirements and priorities
  • Experience of leading and developing individuals within a team or a project, including inspiring others to engage with new processes and ideas.
  • Demonstrate and contribute to the implementation of creative and innovative approaches to delivering better quality services and products
  • Experience of delivering schedules on “Tier 1” complex projects
  • Demonstrate experience of making the step change in planning and scheduling processes, systems, tools & techniques, with experience in development, execution and analysis of cost and resource loaded programmes on complex schemes
  • Exceptional understanding and experience of contracts, NEC3&4 in particular
