The role and our team
A career in project delivery, means you'll be making a real difference to the nation! BEIS has some of the most fascinating and complex projects in government today. Projects ranging from economy-wide transformations to cutting edge scientific research and innovation. As well as projects generating cheaper, cleaner, homegrown energy.
We are the Centre of Excellence (CoE) Team. We are part of the 'Implementation and Delivery Directorate' (IDD). Who report into the Permanent Secretary. Putting our directorate at the very centre of project delivery in BEIS. Performing a vital role in securing the success of the Government’s ambitious agenda. IDD leads on four key aspects of the project delivery profession in BEIS.
- Monitoring- the status of the BEIS project portfolio.
- Managing-taking action to increase the likelihood of project delivery success.
- Mentoring- developing individual and organisational delivery capability.
- Moving Up- transforming and improving how we deliver.
CoE focus on developing project delivery capability. This involves us provisioning learning and development, nurturing professional communities of practise. Providing all staff, with help and guidance on how to undertake project delivery. As well as adjusting and improving our departments approaches to delivery. As well as, ensuring that the department is learning lessons as we go.
This is an exciting time to join our team. BEIS's portfolio is growing, and the number of project delivery professionals is increasing. You'll be building new relationships across our department, partner organisations and government. Working with others, focused on achieving outstanding delivery in government. You'll play an active part in fulling our responsibility to:
- Develop and improve BEIS’s exemplary project delivery profession. Growing their skills and experience to deliver ever more complex and challenging projects.
- Build a strong, connected, and inclusive project delivery community. Making knowledge, experience and support available to peers.
- Provide the tools, help and guidance staff need to manage project delivery. So best practise becomes common practise.

We have three posts available.
Successful applicants will be assigned in the team to support either; Delivery Improvement, Learning from Experience or Capability Management.

Key responsibilities
- Delivery Improvement: Supporting our continuous improvement activities across the department. Focused on the implementation of organisational assessments to gauge project delivery maturity.
- Learning from Experience: Supporting knowledge sharing practises throughout our department’s delivery work. Focused on the implementation of our 'Learning from Experience Strategy'.
- Capability Management: Supporting our project delivery capability services, including learning & development to project delivery professionals and non-project delivery professionals. Focused on managing our end-to-end service processes.
Each post will at times cover the other. To support your career development, rotation through these posts will be possible. In all these roles, the opportunity to stretch and grow your skills will be present.
As a ‘Project Support Officer’ in one of these roles, you can expect to be:
- Creating and managing plans and schedules to deliver against agreed timelines and deadlines.
- Identifying risks and tracking actions to address them.
- Supporting usage of our digital project management tools and processes.
- Organising and managing secure storage of and access to key documentation.
- Managing and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders at all levels.
- Facilitating meetings and workshops in support of projects, assessments and learning events.
- Analysing data and feedback, to help identify issues and opportunities for business improvement.
- Building project delivery capability in others, coaching and guiding colleagues.
- Managing performance data in our suite of digital project management tools.
- Supporting the governance of various boards and forums on behalf of your team.
- Supporting the preparation of briefings to senior colleagues and stakeholders.
- Responding to questions and service requests within given timescales.
- Managing detailed tasks and processes and fulfilling service requests.
- Learning, assessing, and improving processes we provide to you.
As a CoE team member, exemplifying 'continuous professional development' is important. We will provide you with career development support. Such as the Government Online Skills Tool. Helping you plan your personal development in partnership with your line manager. We will provide you with learning routes tailored to your development needs. These may include but are not limited to:
- Recognised and accredited Project Delivery training.
- Leadership and management development programmes.
- Mentoring and coaching programmes.
- Networking and peer-to peer learning.
Skills and experience
We'd love to hear from you if you:
- Have experience of applying project delivery techniques to help teams achieve successful outcomes.
- You're a quick and capable learner.
- You act as an advocate when using a range of digital project management tools.
- You build great working relationships across teams and organisations.
- You can use a wide range of data and evidence to keep those who need to know, informed of emerging issues and trends.
- You can coordinate a complex workload and able to prioritise competing demands.
- You have strong presentation skills and are an excellent communicator.

- Knowledge management - is the ability to identify, share and promote best practices and lessons learned to create a culture of learning and good practice that supports continuous improvement to optimise project delivery.

It is helpful if you have a recognised accreditation in professional project management, such as PRINCE2 Practitioner or APM Practitioner Qualification. If you don't, that is not a problem. You should still consider the role if you have the necessary experience. After you have completed your probationary period. We will support you in obtaining accreditation.
