Associated British Ports South Wales consists of the Ports of Barry, Cardiff, Newport, Port Talbot, and Swansea. Collectively these ports handle more than 12 million tonnes of cargo every year and cover an area of 3,400 acres.
We are seeking a dedicated and motivated Deckhand to join our team based out of the Swansea and Barry Pilot Stations. As a Deckhand, you will play a crucial role in supporting the safe and efficient operations of our port facilities.
The shift pattern operates primarily on a rolling pattern of 12 days on 6 days off. When working a flexible approach is required, operating on a mixture of day shifts and tidal work.
Main Duties
- Assist the Pilot Launch Coxswain in the operation of the Pilot Launch.
- Assist the Coxswain to convey pilots and other authorized persons as requested by Cardiff Local Port Services and provide for the safe transfer of pilots and others to/from vessels as directed.
- Assist the Coxswain to maintain the launch in carrying out routing checks & maintenance and repairing minor defects.
- Ensure any defects are reported to the Coxswain.
- Ensure pilot ladders appear in good order and are rigged in accordance with relevant regulations.
- Assist in the investigation of pollution reports within the arear and take samples where required.
- Willing to undertake training to Coxswain.
- Any other duties as directed by the Operational Maintenance Supervisor.
Skills, experiences, qualifications, and competencies
Essential Requirements:
- Experience of working on small vessels, preferably power driven vessels.
- Computer literate including Word, Excel and Outlook to effectively handle company systems.
- Able to communicate via VHF radio to provide concise instruction to vessels arriving or departing
- Able to carry out routine tasks without supervision.
- Full UK driving licence & Own Transport.
Ideal:
- Working knowledge Marine Safety / Quality Management systems and procedures.
- Experience of operating commercial work boats and vessels under 24mtrs LOA.
