Position Purpose
The Associate Dean for Student Life (ADSL) provides leadership, direction, and administrative oversight for the Office of Student Life, supporting students across degree programs at the Geisel School of Medicine in reaching their fullest potential. Oversees the development and implementation of programs and services that support the academic, personal, and professional success of students. Leads and manages the student services and student life functions for Geisel’s portfolio of degree granting educational programs. The functions and services supported by the Office of Student Life include student well-being and counseling, career advising and career services, co-curricular activity development and coordination, school-wide events, academic success/learning support and accessibility services and collaborative support of student government. Ensures that Geisel’s student life services remain fully compliant with applicable accreditation standards (e.g., LCME, CEPH).
To serve as an advocate for students and work collaboratively with other administrators, faculty, and staff across student support and curricular offices, to create a positive and supportive learning environment.
The ADSL works closely with the other senior associate deans, unit leaders across educational programs, and school leadership.
Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp
PhD plus 6 or more years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- MD, DO, EdD, or PhD or equivalent doctorate, with experience in a related field such as higher education, student affairs, counseling, or psychology
- 5-10 years’ experience in leading institutional efforts in student affairs and/or student life
- Knowledge of medical education and the unique needs and challenges of medical students
- Demonstrated record of excellence and knowledge of student life program development and innovation
- Demonstrated understanding of higher education administration with a proven knowledge of budget management and building effective relationships
- Commitment to keeping informed of best practices in student life/student services
- Commitment to support, contribute to and strengthen a vibrant, culturally diverse, and inclusive learning community of students, faculty, and fellow professionals.
- Supervisory experience
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to plan and prioritize work independently
- High degree of initiative, tact, and diplomacy
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective interaction with diverse groups and individuals
- Has no direct responsibility for student evaluation or grading
Preferred Qualifications
- Proven experience with accreditation processes
- Experience with strategic planning implementation and new program development
