Database Engineer (SQL Server) London, England

Full Time London, England 48401 - 70055 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

About Ekco xTEN
We’re an Azure Cloud Solution Partner (CSP), Managed Service Provider (MSP) and Microsoft Solutions Partner for Cloud and Data Platform. Specialising in high-performance systems and databases. We have a proven track record of building and supporting complex systems with a strong focus on continuous optimisations and improvements.

The company is at a very exciting stage of its growth, recently investing heavily in our custom systems and processes, meaning that we’re in a strong position to capitalise on an already market-leading position.

“Ekco xTEN is powered by our custom monitoring solution (xMP) and a virtual dog called TED (long story) who we’ve trained to sniff out issues, evaluate incidents and fetch the data required for the engineers to make an informed decision. You’ll help to develop TED and other in-house tools to banish monotonous tasks and automate the mundane, enabling the team to stay lean but do more.”

Are we your cup of tea?

  • Do you thrive with autonomy and having the freedom to get stuff done properly?
Make sure that this is you. Our software and processes keep us honest, but we don’t have anyone dishing out work and chasing.
  • We have a unique environment for learning with a team of keen learners and natural mentors.
Training is made up of 70% work experience, 20% self-learning and 10% training, which comes from internal knowledge sharing and your training resources.
  • You’ll become an expert in the tools you use.
We believe that using fewer technologies properly is better than using many technologies inefficiently. We’re not fans of the “use everything, deliver nothing” approach.
  • You won’t be expected to run a team because there won’t be loads of people.
We’re lean, and we aim to stay that way. Therefore, juniors and seniors alike get involved in whatever’s needed and speak directly with our wonderful customers.

About the role

We are seeking a Database Engineer with SQL Server experience to join our fast-growing team. This position is mostly remote, based anywhere in the UK. However, we require you to attend monthly company events (near Leeds) and possible client visits.

A key aspect of the role will be to assist new and existing customers on their journey to the public cloud from either on-prem or other private or public cloud services and to deploy new environments or services. Ekco xTEN provides a first-class service to customers, providing responsive, agile support.

A typical day could include any of the following:
  • Delivering exceptional customer service, working alongside an account manager to ensure their needs are met.
  • Developing an industry-unique approach to Managed Services, working on internal tooling and processes to simplify our work and ensure we get the information we need.
  • Supporting SQL Server instances through complete lifecycles (build, maintain, update, migrate).
  • Develop and improve our monitoring solutions and automated evaluation engine.
  • The freedom to tear any of that up if you’ve got a better solution.

Essential Skills / Experience
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as a Production DBA
  • Knowledge of infrastructure (compute, storage, networks) both on-prem and in the Cloud
  • Exposure to monitoring tools for Microsoft SQL Server
  • Confidence in working directly with customers, gather requirements, creating designs, and completing deployment to meet their technical challenges
  • Experience using service management tools (we use JIRA)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in performing migrations/upgrades of SQL Server
  • Azure Database Administrator Associate certification
  • Experience with scripting languages (PowerShell preferred)
  • Experience using version control (we use Azure DevOps)
