Job description
Summary:
As a Database Administrator (DBA), you will be responsible for managing and maintaining the organization's databases to ensure optimal performance, availability, and data integrity. You will work closely with development teams, system administrators, and other stakeholders to design, implement, and support database systems, Your role will involve tasks such as database installation, configuration, security, backup and recover, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
What you will do:
- Database Design and Implementation:
- Collaborate with stakeholders to analyze database requirements and design efficient and scalable database structures
- Install and configure database management systems (DBMS) such as Oracle, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, or PostgreSQL
- Create and manage database objects, including tables, indexes, views, stored procedures, and triggers
- Define and enforce database standards and best practices to ensure data consistency and integrity
- Database Security and Access Control:
- Implement and manage database security measures, including user authentication, authorization, and role-based access controls
- Monitor and audit database activities to detect and mitigate potential security breaches
- Apply security patches and updates to address known vulnerabilities
- Perform regular backups and implement disaster recovery strategies to protect data against loss or corruption
- Database Performance Tuning and Optimization:
- Monitor database performance and identify opportunities for optimization
- Analyze query execution plans, index usage, and system resource utilization to improve query performance
- Tune database parameters and configurations for optimal performance
- Implement and maintain database monitoring tools to proactively identify performance bottlenecks
- Database Backup and Recovery:
- Develop and implement backup and recovery strategies to ensure data availability and integrity
- Perform regular database backups and validate restoration processes
- Conduct periodic disaster recovery drills to test and refine recovery procedures
- Monitor database replication and implement high availability solutions, such as clustering or mirroring
- Database Troubleshooting and Support:
- Diagnose and resolve database-related issues, including performance problems, data corruption, and connectivity errors
- Collaborate with development teams to optimize SQL queries and database schema design
- Provide technical support and guidance to application developers and end-users
- Document troubleshooting procedures and resolutions for future reference
- Database Administration and Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of database configurations, procedures, and guidelines
- Perform database capacity planning and forecasting to ensure adequate resources are available
- Stay up-to-date with the latest database technologies, trends, and best practices
- Participate in database-related projects and initiatives, such as upgrades or migrations
- Work Environment:
- This role is 100% remote. Proximity to one of our existing locations is preferred, but not required
- This role uses Google Workspace collaborative software and standard office equipment such as computers, printers, and telephones
- Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays and provide after hours support when needed
What you will bring:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Proven experience as a Database Administrator or in a similar role
- In-depth knowledge of database management systems (SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle)
- Familiarity with database design principles, normalization, and indexing techniques
- Proficiency in SQL and ability to write complex queries, stored procedures, and functions
- Experience with database security and access control mechanisms
- Strong understanding of database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery concepts
- Knowledge of database performance tuning and optimization techniques
- Familiarity with database monitoring and diagnostic tools
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues
- Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills

The annual salary range is $115,000-$125,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, and a 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
