Data Scientist/Bioinformatician

Data Scientist/Bioinformatician Manchester, England

The University of Manchester
Full Time Manchester, England 44414 - 54421 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

We seek a highly motivated Data Scientist or Bioinformatician to work within the Congenital Heart Disease Research group led by Bernard Keavney, British Heart Foundation (BHF) Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine. The post is funded until 31st March 2028 by the BHF. The Keavney group is an international leader in Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) research. CHD is the commonest birth defect which affects around 1% of the population globally. As the adult population with CHD has grown due to effective childhood treatment, survivors are increasingly susceptible to the common diseases of later life; we seek to understand the reasons for this.

The group has recently identified several genes and genomic regions predisposing to CHD through GWAS, whole-exome sequencing, and genome-wide CNV characterisation; updated the global epidemiology of CHD through meta-analysis; and identified novel CHD comorbidities through electronic health record research.

You will contribute (with two other postdoctoral research Bioinformaticians/Data Scientists) to the analysis of large-scale population resources such as UK Biobank, the 100,000 Genomes, the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) and our own in-house data. Hypotheses to be tested will involve both genetic and non-genetic data. Therefore, a background either in electronic health record research or human population genomics would be suitable for this post. A strong statistical background (either in statistical genetics or statistical epidemiology) would be an advantage.

You will analyse and integrate datasets with the aim of identifying causative loci, mechanisms, comorbidities and potential interventions in congenital heart disease. You will have the opportunity to develop novel tools and approaches that bear on these problems, implement and deploy new and existing bioinformatics applications, contribute to grant applications and publications, and develop your career towards scientific independence.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status. All appointments are made on merit.
