Job description

Ordnance Survey has embarked upon a new product innovation approach to help bring new ideas to life and to better serve our customers. As part of this, we are looking to recruit a new data scientist into our team to help us combine earth observation data with our own world-leading data to bring new products and services to market.

About the role

We are looking for an aspiring Data Scientist to join our recently launched earth observation squad. This team is developing new and existing solutions in the environmental monitoring and sustainability sector working with some of the latest innovations in the industry such as high-resolution thermal heat data to drive new ways we can solve problems our customers are facing.

In this role you will be responsible for proving the feasibility of ideas on the squad. Working alongside the product manager and other squad members, you will use your data science skills to build and test data prototypes to understand the value of an idea, provide analysis and reports of your findings and provide understanding and expertise to stakeholders to help drive and develop ideas forward along our innovation pipeline from concept to build.

You will also be part of a broader data science community at OS, sharing your knowledge and expertise to help improve our organizational best practices in data science and collaborating on broader cross-business issues.

What we are looking for

If you are interested in joining a team that lies at the heart of moving OS into the future, we are looking for an individual that can demonstrate the following skills and experiences:

Degree level qualification in a quantitative discipline or significant experience in a relevant field
Prior experience applying data science towards customer specific problems
Familiarity with Azure Machine Learning (or other cloud-based data science platforms)
Strong python programming skills. (Candidates with experience in other programming languages will also be considered)
Familiarity working with Geospatial data and industry tools (ESRI ArcGIS Pro, SAFE FME (Feature Manipulation Engine), Geo-pandas, shapely etc)
Ability to communicate and present complex subject matter in an accessible manner
Positive and collaborative work ethic
Having any of the following will be an advantage but is not required
Having pre-existing experience working with Earth Observation data (such as Sentinel 2 imagery)

Salary – £41,659 - £46,559

Location: We embrace a hybrid working model at OS and understand there is no one size fits all in relation to how we work. We have a fantastic HQ in Southampton, Hampshire where you will be required to spend one day a week with the remaining time being a personal choice as to whether you work from home, one of our regional offices or spend more time at OSHQ.

OS conducts DBS background checks for all joiners and some of our roles require additional security clearance, including to SC or DV level in some cases. We will tell candidates at the appropriate time during the recruitment process if additional clearance will be required for this role.
