Job description
Our aim is to be the leading global provider of solutions that enable customers to release £30bn of value per annum from distributed energy resources (DERs). We are building a Software as a Service (SaaS) subscription business with a global addressable market of £2.4 billion per annum, by digitally connecting hundreds of thousands of DERs with energy markets.
We have already attained a market leading position and KrakenFlex is a recognised thought leader and innovator in the industry. Our efforts have not gone unnoticed and we are pleased to announce that we now have the full support and backing of Octopus Energy, an award-winning UK energy supplier who share our passion and values.
We're looking for a research-focused, flexible data scientist to join our team building the next generation of distributed energy management technologies. At Kraken NeXt we tackle impossible problems and test unreasonable hypotheses, taking ideas from academic literature, emerging technologies, and the imagination of our talented employees. As a member of NeXt you'll be joining a fast-paced environment where we build real things to test and demonstrate these ideas, and help unlock the creativity of the rest of the organisation to discover new ways of seeing existing problems.
You'll be good at thinking on your feet and exploring a problem space alongside colleagues in a highly collaborative manner. We're looking for someone who can make brutal assumptions to get something real built and applied to the real world, but who won't overlook important hints that we're going in the wrong direction. We will offer you the freedom and flexibility to be creative, as you would find in an academic setting, paired with the resources and structure to help guarantee and direct that success.
What you'll do
- Work in a fast-paced environment tackling diverse R+D demands covering big data and AI, product design, and social sciences
- Gather and process data and observations from a diverse range of sources to test hypotheses
- Work with other team members building visualisations and proof-of-concept solutions
- Research and explore problems to define them and derive sensible, testable, approaches
- Stay up-to-date with literature in the distributed energy space
- Help define data science best practices and engage with colleagues to share information, grow skills, and provide feedback.
- Collaborate with colleagues across KrakenFlex to learn about the electricity system in the UK and beyond
- Disseminate insights across the organisation
What you'll need
- Ability to process data to derive meaningful insights and information from data in a rigorous, curious, manner
- 'Data science stack' experience: python, pandas, Jupyter, etc. R, Matlab (Julia also works for us but is less used internally)
- Strong numerical skills and intuition for data
- Experience with machine learning, statistics, and analytical techniques for modelling
- Experience in a research role, academically or in industry
- Proven ability to build software solutions
- An interest in storytelling with data, and a desire to explain and craft a clear message from findings
- A willingness to work outside your immediate area and skillset
- Awareness of software engineering techniques to ensure your work is maintainable, interoperable, and correct
Why else you'll love it here
- Wondering what the salary for this role is? Just ask us! On a call with one of our recruiters it's something we always cover as we genuinely want to match your experience with the correct salary. The reason why we don't advertise is because we honestly have a degree of flexibility and would never want salary to be a reason why someone doesn't apply to Octopus - what's more important to us is finding the right octofit!
- Octopus Energy is a unique culture. An organisation where people learn, decide, and build quicker.
