This position may be filled remotely in our Jefferson City, Kansas City, Omaha, Springfield, or St. Louis locations.
The Data Science Team at Husch Blackwell delivers solutions to legal and operational problems using a wide range of mathematical and computational methods. Our projects are highly collaborative and often executed on tight timelines.
The Senior Data Scientist is adept at quickly developing novel solutions to a variety of complex data problems and is comfortable tackling problems and domains they have never seen before. When faced with a business or data problem they lack the skills to solve, they will be able to quickly capitalize on our significant research and training resources to learn the necessary subject and successfully execute the project.
They are aware of the ethical concerns and potential risks of machine learning and data science. They can effectively advocate for solutions that minimize exposure to risk for both the firm and our clients.
The right candidate will have a passion for finding solutions to a constantly changing set of problems and collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders and cross-functional teams. They can communicate effectively at all levels of the firm and directly with clients. This includes leading project meetings and delivering project results. Essential job functions include:
- Leverage skills in mathematics and programming to develop novel solutions for a constantly changing portfolio of projects.
- Collaborate with the Data Science team members and team leadership in project development and execution.
- Work with firm leadership, attorneys, and clients to identify and solve problems.
- Mentor, guide, and support less experienced members of the team while working collaboratively to deliver data products for stakeholders.
- Engage in open-ended research to identify new capabilities, opportunities, product concepts, and to maintain and improve team processes and standards.
- Advocate for ethical data science practice and provide thought leadership in the firm.
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail in technical and professional communication.
Position Requirements
- A Master’s degree in mathematics, computer science, or related field. Significant coursework and work experience in those areas acceptable with a non-graduate degree.
- Outstanding communication skills.
- At least five years of professional work in software engineering, applied mathematics, or statistics; academic work is not counted towards this experience.
- Deep proficiency in Python and the Python data science stack.
- Significant experience with SQL to consume and manipulate data.
- Fundamental understanding of machine learning methods and their applications.
- Experience developing with LLM’s over an API using Python.
- Knowledge of LLM prompting techniques.
- Experienced with the deployment and maintenance of machine learning models in production environments.
- Excellent project management skills.
- Strong knowledge of macOS or Linux command line.
- Comfortable using Git and version control concepts.
- Experience with Natural Language Processing in classical and generative contexts.
- Experience developing data visualizations and an understanding of graphic design and visual communication.
- Exceptionally adept at tailoring communication to a given audience; comfortable engaging in productive conversation at all levels of the organization.
- Strong demonstrated ability to leverage technical capabilities to meet business objectives
PREFERRED:
- Professional work with AWS or Azure cloud tools.
- Experience with the Hugging Face ecosystem and open source LLMs.
- Experience as a tech lead or engineering mentor.
- Ability to develop, design, and iterate operational standards.
- Knowledge of, or professional work with, mapping and GIS.
- Web development experience with standards-compliant tooling and vanilla Javascript.
