Senior Data Scientist - Semiconductor Service
We have an exciting new role within our Engineering Analytics team. We are looking for an experienced data scientist to join the Semiconductor Service Division at Edwards, part of the Atlas Copco Group. Reporting into the Semiconductor Division Analytics Manager, the role will require an interest in the fundamentals of how the business works and understand how to contribute to business success.
Your mission in Semiconductor Service
- The candidate will explore the data, and engage with other domain experts, to research and develop models and algorithms, whilst also developing visuals and dashboards to convey model predictions.
- Demonstrating a genuine interest in accurately understanding and acting on customer needs and expectations is a key skill needed for this role, alongside this, having the ability to prioritise work and timely address customer requests.
- The insights produced by the Data Scientist are used within the Semiconductor Service Operational Excellence framework, to provide value-added aftersales services to customers, this includes guidance for predictive or condition-based maintenance, the avoidance of unplanned downtime, or the proactive management of spares/inventory or service effort.
- This role involves actively collaborating with others and openly sharing knowledge and experiences. Making productive contributions to the team, and being inquisitive and creative is a necessity, whilst also making sure to take a structured approach to executing data science projects, being hypothesis driven, and using rigorous scientific and data analysis methods to uncover potential bias in the data. It is important to be able to maintain and foster relationships with other subject matter experts too, including product Technical Support, and Customers.
Main responsibilities:
- Build and develop hypotheses and models for data, which accurately predict aspects of equipment condition or performance, and can be used to underpin valuable service products.
- Present and communicate findings to stakeholders, using a media appropriate to the audience.
- Collaborate, to build the subject matter expertise of others into your work.
- Develop data analytic code, adopting and extending re-usable design patterns and modules across prototype and production models.
- Specify or develop requirements for data linkage and tests for data quality, so the required pre-processing can be automated by Data Engineers.
- Participate in team design and code peer-reviews, to help establish and share best practice.
- Keep up-to date with state-of-the-art data science methods and technology, maintaining internal and external peer networks, to facilitate professional development of yourself and the team.
Who you are:
- Degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering or Physical Sciences, or other Mathematics-based discipline
- 3+ years in a Data Analytics or Data Science role, ideally using data to study the performance or condition of physical/industrial assets. You may also have experience with the use of NLP to extract labels or other information from free-text records, or image processing to identify and classify features in still images or video.
- Self-reliant software developer, using mainstream data analytics languages: e.g. Python or R, Matlab, Scala. Experience with version control systems such as SVN or Git. Experience of Industrial IoT (IioT) platforms – e.g. SCADA – would be an advantage. Experience of scalable cloud computing environments, and the use of containers to build and deploy applications, would be an advantage.
- Excellent spoken and written English. An additional European or Asian language is beneficial.

We have a flexible working culture, with an opportunity to work from home or as a hybrid worker out of our head office in Burgess Hill, West Sussex, there will also be global travel.
