DATA SCIENTIST
BGS INFORMATICS FUNCTION
This role can be based either at the BGS headquarters in Keyworth in Nottingham or at one of our offices in either Edinburgh, or Wallingford in Oxfordshire
UKRI Pay Band C (or potentially UKRI Pay Band D depending on skills and experience)
Pay Band C salary is £25,702 to £27,938 per annum (Pay Band D salary, which starts at £31,931 per annum, may be payable to very strong applicants who can also demonstrate the Band D (and most/all desirable) criteria set out in this advert)

About the role
The BGS Informatics Research Team are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Data Scientist to join the data analytics and processing group. The successful candidate can be based in either Keyworth, Edinburgh or Wallingford.
This new and exciting post focusses on the development and application of data science and statistical tools within multidisciplinary teams to solve global, environmental, and sustainability geoscience challenges.
You will contribute to a range of statistical and data science projects relating to Informatics in BGS and work alongside researchers addressing science challenges across BGS and with external collaborators. The projects will include methodological research to build capacity, the analysis of specific earth science and environmental data sets in the context of wider studies and the development of workflows to automate these analyses and to apply them at scale.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team who are undertaking environmental science research utilising innovative data science and statistical techniques, developing open-source software, and assisting with open datasets.
You will work across varied and often multi-disciplinary project teams and provide the expertise required to develop, apply, and advise on the use of data science and statistical methods, and other mathematical and analysis techniques.
About you
This post would be ideal for someone who has graduated with a master’s degree or PhD with a relevant data science or statistics focus or has the equivalent research work experience.
You will be an excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing and be able to communicate statistical concepts to non-scientists. The post will involve multidisciplinary team working and you will therefore be able to work effectively with scientists in different fields.
The work will be mostly UK based but you may be required to work overseas for short periods of time.
