Job description
About Gousto
Gousto is on a mission to become the most loved way to eat dinner. Our meal kits offer the greatest choice, quality and convenience to make it easy for our customers to eat better and make a positive difference to our planet.
We're one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing scale-ups in the UK as well as being a B-Corp. We deeply understand the value of a nurturing culture that empowers smart, motivated people through data and technology. Our customers tell us they want even greater choice and flexibility and constantly challenge us to enable them to cook what they want, when and where they want it. Our ambition is to continue to exceed their expectations, and we want your help.
At Gousto we are a data company that loves food. Data science and analytics are embedded across all of our tribes. We have a wide range of data science models in production, from menu planning, recommendations and retention to forecasting, network and factory optimisation and simulation. Our Data Science Managers play a key role in leading our teams. They provide guidance and support on delivering current business priorities and career counselling for more junior team members. They also work closely with our technical leads (Principal Data Scientists) and the Head of Data Science to shape the data science community, contributing to setting expected standards in all our data products.
At Gousto, our data teams are central to our ability to deliver an amazing customer experience. We do this by delivering change through cross-functional squads grouped into four tribes, each focused on a different part of the customer journey. Our Data Scientists are each embedded in a squad, working alongside product management, software engineering, and other teams.
You will be responsible for managing the Data Scientists across several squads covering forecasting, network optimisation, factory optimisation and simulation. You will work with the Product Management team to define OKRs for the next six months and work with the Data Scientists to deliver these in the most efficient way.
We're looking for a highly motivated individual who shares our vision and is passionate to deliver on behalf of our customers. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a track record of leading teams to build data products to make a lasting impact on customers.
What Will Keep You Busy:
- Working with the Data Scientists and Product Managers in each of the squads to define the OKRs for the next six months. These will be based on guidance from the tribe leadership teams. You will help to shape the OKRs and ensure that they are aligned with business priorities and technically feasible.
- Guiding the Data Scientists in your squads in best practices for task prioritisation and planning.
- Providing expert level technical support to the team.
- Career counselling, performance reviews, feedback and personal development guidance for all direct reports.
- Communicating with the tribe leadership team and the Head of Data Science to keep them updated on progress and to escalate any blockers.
- Shaping the data science team. Identifying gaps in skills and methodologies and finding ways to address these through hiring, up-skilling or new processes.
- Working closely with the Principal Data Scientist. Their role is to build roadmaps for longer term data science opportunities, whilst your focus is on near-term work. You will work together to ensure that short term efforts are putting in place the foundations required for the longer term vision.
- Playing a leading role in our data community: Your team will be a big part of our overall data community at Gousto. You'll drive engagement across the data science community at Gousto and contribute your own ideas to products outside your tribe during data science team meetings. Your expertise will help shape the wider data science functional strategy, from tools to ways of working.
Requirements:
- You have led data science teams in the development of data products for supply chain and/or factory optimisation, and made a measurable impact to customers through doing so
- You are equally as comfortable in writing code as leading others to do so.
- You have a good understanding of modern data science techniques & tools, and have applied this knowledge in complex problem domains and with large data sets. In particular you have worked on optimisation problems and have a good understanding of relevant methodologies
- You're comfortable working alongside and collaborating with other technical professionals, such as engineers & product managers. You focus on making even highly technical work in data accessible to others.
- You distil complex problems into simple pieces, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- You thrive in a fast-paced, high growth, technology focused organisation.
