The engineering team is a critical part of our transformation journey and delivery and sits at the core of enabling data across the organisation. We look after an Azure Databricks-based data platform, introducing new features and technologies as needed to support best-in-class analytical capabilities. We provide high quality datasets for analysts and data scientists, enabling them to deliver trusted reports, analyses, and machine learning models that deliver real value to the business and our customers.
Main Purpose of the Role
The Data Engineer works as part of the Global Data team to convert business requirements into business solutions. You will migrate and transform data, creating views that can be utilised across the organisation. You will facilitate the use of data within the data team as well as allowing the benefits of data to be liberated across the organisation.
Every project brings a new challenge, whether that be new technologies, varied data sources from diverse source systems, or specific business requirements. You will work with data for various business functions including optical, contact lenses, audiology, supply chain & marketing. For day to day delivery, you will work within a cross functional team, who will provide you with the support to do your job well without distractions.

We will provide you with training opportunities and career development, including support for Azure certifications, so you can keep up to date on the latest in engineering and data technology innovation, share ideas and highlight opportunities to adopt them.
The Experience
Essential
- Good technical ability and understanding of how databases work, as well as the use of data development software (ETL packages) and programming languages (usually SQL and Python) to develop tools to extract, transform and load data, as well as to document the creation of these tools.
- Proficient capability to understand business processes in detail, to apply knowledge and acquire more, in order to understand and create requirements, apply them to a tool design and execute its build.
- Experience in some or all of the following tools & programming languages:
- Azure Data Lake
- Azure Data Factory
- Azure Databricks (inc. SQL and Python)
- Azure SQL Server
- Azure DevOps/Git
- Excellent communication skills as you will need to discuss technical principles and business processes in simple language to people at all levels.
- Enthusiasm for learning, trying new things, sharing knowledge and developing skills in others.
Desirable
- A background in business analysis, audit, support or the Specsavers business is desirable.
