Job Summary and Qualifications
The Data Engineer is part of the Clinical Services Group (CSG) Data & Analytics organization of HCA Healthcare. This team, both technically-focused and hospital-facing, is responsible for HCA’s enterprise clinical reporting. With a goal of reducing avoidable variation in clinical practice, it has proven successful through targeted programs that leverage actionable and transparent analytics to drive positive change.
The Data Engineer is responsible for the development of technical requirements and programming logic for new clinical and operational process metrics. The Data Engineer must understand database architecture and ETL concepts to ensure alignment with enterprise data management standards. This position requires working with cross-functional teams to translate business and clinical needs into actionable reporting, and a willingness to learn the subject-matter necessary to develop and implement clinical data requirements. This individual must possess superior analytical and SQL query skills, have excellent communication skills [both written and verbal], possess servant abilities, have relationship building skills, portray a professional presence, and have a proven track record of delivering high quality results.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Accurately interpret and translate clinical business requirements into technical requirements
- Model database artifacts using PowerDesigner based on data and visualization requirements or platform-specific needs
- Query various databases using advanced SQL. Database platforms include Teradata, SQL Server, PostgreSQL
- Create ETL solutions using SSIS for loading data from various sources: databases, CSV files or Excel files
- Develop programming logic for clinical and operational data metrics and visualizations
- Participates in QA process by performing testing on SQL queries to ensure accuracy and efficiency
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with other CSG Data Organization team members, clinical stakeholders and ITG colleagues.
- Maximize productivity and accountability through effective time management, coordination, and communication
- Responsible for compliance with Internal Audit standards for information protection and business processes
- Practices and adheres to the “Code of Conduct” philosophy and “Mission and Value Statement.”
- Perform other related duties as assigned
EXPERIENCE
- 2-5 years of experience with data architecture - table modeling (using PowerDesigner) and creation, view and stored procedure creation
- 2-5 years of experience with ETL software (Visual Studio, SSIS, BTEQ)
- 2-5 years of experience with database management systems (Teradata and SQL Server primarily)
- Some experience with BI platform development (Microsoft Power BI)
- Some experience with application development software like PowerShell is a plus.
- 1-2 years of experience in nursing data domain is a plus
- HCA-based systems experience is a plus
EDUCATION
- Bachelors degree required
