Carrum Health
Full Time United States 180000 - 140000 USD ANNUAL Today
Job description

At Carrum, we are passionate about transforming the healthcare system to create an unmatched experience for patients. If you want to thrive in an entrepreneurial, cutting-edge environment while participating in the end of surprise bills, poor quality, and high prices, we would love to connect with you.

Carrum Health has invented a unique Center of Excellence (CoE) model, which lowers healthcare costs while providing access to the highest quality surgeons. Carrum uses a plethora of private and public data sources to identify the best surgeons and surgical locations for effective, low-cost surgeries. We then form novel contracts based on fixed-cost procedure "bundles" rather than "fee-for-service"-based itemized costs. These bundles greatly simplify billing and help to align economic incentives with patient outcomes for provider organizations.

Carrum has bundled over 80 procedures and demonstrated savings up to 45% on a per-procedure basis. We pass these savings along to patients by partnering with self-insured employers (covering 61% of all individuals with employer-backed healthcare) and providing our surgical bundles for their employee population. Our bundles are often free to employees and include a care expert to guide patients through every step of surgery via our unique digital health platform.

Our team's execution has been recognized by the venture community, and we've raised more than $50M in aggregate from investors like Tiger Global Management and Wildcat Ventures. Our impact has been externally proven in a 2021 RAND Corporation study and featured as a Harvard Business School (HBS) case study.

We are looking for a Data Engineer with a strong combination of technical skills, creativity and curiosity, a strategic mindset, and a team-player personality to join our growing Data Platform team. The ideal candidate is someone who has designed and implemented maintainable, scalable data products and is comfortable with task prioritization in a high-growth mode start-up. This position will enable analytics, scalability, and a portfolio of data products for both internal teams and external consumers. You will be part of creating the data foundation that is critical to our mission.

This is a full time position with the opportunity to work remotely. Carrum has offices in Chicago and San Francisco that are available on an optional basis.

The salary range for this role is $140k - $180k plus bonus.

You're excited about this opportunity because you will…

  • Develop and maintain creative solutions to evolving challenges that span data processing, data modeling, and machine learning model deployment.

  • Master the ins and outs of our healthcare datasets, including medical claims and insurance eligibility.

  • Collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders to properly understand data needs. Grow and maintain pipelines that power analytics, machine learning, and data products in our application layer.

  • Partner with the analytics and data science team members to understand and optimize downstream data usage.

  • Understand HIPAA compliance and support Carrum's success in this area.

  • Participate early in the development of a robust data foundation and infrastructure, implementing data architecture, quality control, ETL, build pipelines, reporting systems, and self-service tools as the company grows.

  • Have a direct impact on the technical direction and product roadmap of the company.

We're excited about you because you have…

  • 2+ years professional experience as a data engineer, including ownership of data products.

  • Previously designed and built data platforms while partnering with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Intimate experience working with various data technologies including relational databases, warehouses, and ephemeral cloud compute products. (We spend most of our time with Python, SQL, and AWS.)

  • A history of designing systems with an approach centered on data quality and scalability.

  • An appreciation for the challenges and optimizations relevant to an early-stage start-up environment.

  • Interpersonal skills – you don't have a hard time being empathetic, courteous and friendly.

  • Experience in the healthcare space or another highly-regulated industry.

If you're excited about what you read here, we look forward to hearing from you, even if you aren't sure whether you meet all of the qualifications.

You'll love working with us because...

  • We're a hard-working, humble, and compassionate group motivated to solve the challenging problems in healthcare today. You'll work with talented, experienced co-workers from a variety of backgrounds. We believe in using data to inform decisions, leveraging technology to make our jobs easier, and thinking creatively to pave a path to a better future.

  • We are working with some of the most recognized and esteemed names in the country. Top hospitals like Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, Stanford Health Care, Scripps Health, and Rush Health have joined our platform. Employers who use our benefit include Walgreens, US Foods, United Airlines, and large public sector organizations like the self-insured schools of California and the State of Maine.

  • We empower team members to be autonomous, providing a collaborative environment where you get support and healthy feedback. You can bring your authentic self to work every day and are encouraged to help others do the same.

  • We carve out time to let go of work, to celebrate our successes and have fun. Prior to the pandemic, a few of the monthly activities we enjoyed in-person included group dinners, bowling, and hiking. Now we bring the fun online with holiday costume contests, arts and crafts activities, musical events, and weekly meditations.

  • You'll feel proud that the work you do each day directly impacts people's lives in big and meaningful ways.

Other benefits:

  • Stock option plan
  • Flexible schedules and remote work
  • Chicago and San Francisco offices available
  • Self-managed vacation days, within reason
  • Paid parental leave
  • Health, vision, and dental insurance
  • 401K retirement plan
