Role: Graduate Apprentice Marketing Data Analyst
Grade and Salary: Grade 3, £20,578 - £21,761 per annum
FTE and working pattern: 1 FTE, 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Holiday Entitlement: 28 days annual leave plus 9 buildings closed days (and Christmas Eve when it falls on a weekday)

Purpose of Role
The Graduate Apprentice Marketing Data Analyst will play a key role in this growth and will join a new and growing team dedicated to online programmes at Heriot-Watt University. Working closely with a matrix team of experts in their areas, the Graduate Apprentice Marketing Data Analyst will provide a wide variety of analytical support for the Heriot-Watt Online team, and will be responsible for collecting, organising, analysing, and reporting on data to help improve marketing and recruitment strategies and campaigns
This role is only suitable for a Graduate Apprentice looking to undertake study towards a first degree, BSc (Hons) Data Science. Further details of the courses can be found here:

Over time, the post holder will develop an applied understanding of both data analytics and performance in a higher education and marketing context, while building their work experience. The post holder will have the opportunity to develop a broad range of transferrable skills in areas such as: data analytics, communication and presentation, marketing analytics, forward planning, teamwork, problem solving, customer service and IT. As the role develops, there will be additional opportunities to complete tasks and take part in projects which build on the knowledge gained throughout the candidate's degree programme.
The successful candidate will have excellent analytical and numerical skills. They will have an interest in data-driven decision making and problem-solving, and will enjoy working in a collaborative, team-led environment.
Summary of Key duties and responsibilities
Main duties include, but are not limited to:
- Collect, clean, and organise data from various sources, such as databases, spreadsheets, surveys, and CRM systems.
- Ensure the provision of the data outputs is based on robust and reliable data sources and carry out essential data cleansing work on various data sources used.
- Develop and implement analytical frameworks to identify patterns and trends in data.
- Analyse website traffic, social media engagement, customer behaviour, and market research to provide insights and recommendations to the marketing team.
- Create and present reports, presentations and dashboards that communicate insights and recommendations to marketing teams and other stakeholders.
- Design and conduct A/B testing and other experiments to test the effectiveness of different marketing strategies and tactics and communicate the test results to teams and stakeholders.
- Design and evaluate methods for collecting data.
- Collaborate with other analysts and data scientists to develop predictive models and other advanced analytical tools.
- Help identify and track various trends in data that can be used to make more informed marketing decisions.
- Gather data about consumers, competitors, trends, and market conditions.
- Analyse the marketing funnel to identify inefficiencies and opportunities to improve conversions.
- Analyse the sales funnel to attain valuable insights on sales activities, volumes, and market trends.
- Simplify and communicate key data insights by producing data visualisations.
- Work with the Head of Marketing and Product Strategy to identify, define, track, and monitor KPIs and performance benchmarks.
- Provide first line support to Marketing Managers and the broader Heriot Watt Online team.
- Handle ad hoc data requests and provide support on a variety of tasks and projects, where needed.
What qualification or qualities are required?
The successful candidate will need to be accepted for enrolment onto the Graduate Apprenticeship BSc (Hons) Data Science course above, which will be a condition of any offer of employment. We will expect your covering letter and / or CV to demonstrate how your skills and experience, gained either at work or as part of your studies, makes you suitable for this role.
Each candidate will be assessed for entry individually and other forms of prior learning or experience will be considered if a candidate doesn't hold the exact qualifications listed here:
Year 1:
- SQA Highers at BBBB including Mathematics, plus Computing or similar.
- A-Levels at BBC including Mathematics, plus Computing or similar.
- Int. Baccalaureate 28 points.
- SQA HNC in a computing/engineering discipline (or a suitable Modern Apprenticeship) with Engineering Mathematics 1 & 2 (or equivalent);
- Foundation Apprenticeship in Scientific Technologies/Software Development/Engineering in conjunction with SQA Highers at BBB including Mathematics.

- Explain routine instructions, procedures, operating instructions, or information.
- Reply to simple requests for information, routing enquiries where information is standard/routine.
- Discuss routine work matters with supervisors.
- Always maintain confidentiality.
- Disseminate news and information to relevant customers and colleagues.
- Support in notetaking in various forms of meetings.
Planning and Organising
- Book meetings/workshops for internal and external customers, including room and equipment, hospitality and send invites to attendees as requested.
- Carry out routine instructions from standard procedures.
- File, archive and destroy data in line with the University Data Protection & Retention Policy.
- Provide appropriate admin support for meetings and events.
- Support School/Directorate and team processes and procedures by meeting schedules and timetables, also helping with the management of diaries.
Initiative and Problem Solving
- Act as first point of contact for queries from customers by phone, email, system-generated and in person.
- Use standard procedures and guidelines to solve local, day to day issues.
- Use experience and initiative to identify when to pass non-standard issues to line manager.
Decision Making
- Provide routine advice and guidance, respond to queries, and refer more complex queries to more senior members of the team as appropriate.
- Follow set procedures and protocols referring any non-standard requests to line manager.
- Understand the appropriate tools to use when undertaking day to day tasks
Management Responsibilities
