The V&A is the world’s leading museum of art, design and performance. The V&A’s Collections Division comprises six curatorial, research, and conservation and collections care and access teams. The curatorial departments are Asia; Art, Architecture, Photography and Digital; Decorative Arts and Sculpture; and Performance, Furniture, Textiles and Fashion. The staff in these teams are at the heart of the founding purpose of the museum: to care for, research and develop the collections, to exhibit them to the public, to make them available for study and research, and to broaden access to the collections.
The Asia Department curates the V&A’s outstanding collections from South and South-East Asia, East Asia, and the Middle East. The South Asian collection has over 60,000 objects including paintings, sculpture, textiles, metalwork, arms and armour, jewellery, and furniture, and ranges in date from 2000 BCE to the present. The arts of the Mughal period are a particular strength of the collection.
The Curator will be part of the section who care for, research, display and interpret the South Asian collection, and will take particular responsibility for the V&A’s holdings of Mughal arts. They will also contribute to curatorial work across the Asia Department. The department maintains strong national and international links, and the post-holder will participate in the development of curatorial, educational and research partnerships with national and international institutions. The post-holder will also be expected to make a positive contribution to the life of the wider museum, including active participation in relevant gallery and learning projects, through the exercise of curatorial and communication skills, and through research, publication and contributions to online resources.
